Class activities for Tuesday, September 30

Tuesday, September 30th, 2014

Spelling: We reviewed common spelling patterns for the /or/ sound: or and ore. We also remembered that an r following a vowel makes a new sound.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on visualizing text while reading.

Writing: We continued to learn that adding inner story details of thoughts and feelings adds another layer of realism to personal narratives and stories.

Students also continued to draft their narrative. A personal narrative is due on Friday, October 10. Your student should be nearing the end of their draft at this time.

Math: Students continued to work on the partner math test started last week.

Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes or more using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We wrote notes about the circulatory system and reviewed the respiratory system.

Social Studies: Students received social studies notebooks to use for writing notes. We also started learning that different regions usually have different characteristics. Homework is to finish notebook p. 15.

Spelling: Today was a preview of upcoming spelling words.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: None today due to our technology time.

A personal narrative is due on Friday, October 10. Your student should be drafting at this time.

Math: Today was a math skills practice time using MobyMax.

Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes or more using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We did an experiment to learn how the circulatory and respiratory system work  in exercise. We learned that the heart rate and breathing rate increase during exercise, and slow down at rest. Homework is to finish the “Heart Beats and Breathing” experiment and the “A Breathtaking System” review pages.

Social Studies: Students completed a social studies test today about American Indian environments.

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading skills practice day.

Writing: We talked about how the “inner story” is a character’s thoughts and feelings. The reader won’t know these unless the writer adds them. Inner story details are like dialogue; they make the story more interesting and realistic.

Students also worked on their draft today. A personal narrative is due on Friday, October 10. Your student should be drafting at this time.

Math: Students started a partner math quiz about decimals and place value. Partner are discussing and solving problems together on this assessment.

Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes or more using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We started to learn about the respiratory system.

Social Studies: None today due to our math skills practice time.

Spelling: Today was a spelling and skill test.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups practiced thinking of questions while they read and making connections to the text.

Writing: We reviewed important features of a narrative that we learned in 4th grade.

Good narratives have:

  • a plot, characters, and settings
  • visual details
  • paragraphs
  • scenes made of visual details, talking, and action
  • an interesting lead that starts the story with talking, action, or visual details

Students also started their draft today. A personal narrative is due on Friday, October 10. Your student should be drafting at this time.

Students have been given a colored file folder to use as a writing portfolio for this year. Homework is to decorate the portfolio with clippings, pictures, or illustrations and to return it by Friday for lamination.

Math: We reviewed place value and decimals today. We’ll have a partner MiniQuiz tomorrow in which partners will work together to complete the quiz. A practice quiz (Chapter 1 test) can be found in the math book.

Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes or more using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We started to learn about the circulatory system. Homework is to finish the “An Efficient System” review page.

Social Studies: Students completed a reading challenge to review for our upcoming test. We also played a game to review. The chapter 2 test about American Indian environments will be on Monday.

Spelling: We reviewed forming irregular verbs (verbs that are made past tense without using -ed). This will be the skill on tomorrow’s spelling test.-ed). This will be the skill on tomorrow’s spelling test.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles; some groups practiced making connections by thinking of something the text reminded them of.

Writing: Students had prewriting conferences by commenting on a partner’s writing, asking curious questions. We started a new writing piece today, a second personal narrative. Today, students started prewriting by making a list of ideas they would like in their story. A personal narrative is due on Friday, October 10. Your student should be
