October 14th, 2014
Class activities for Tuesday, October 14
Spelling: We practiced using “confusable” words the proper way. Here are some examples of often-confused words:
- probably/possibly
- our/are
- then/than
- astrology/astronomy
Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.
Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on visualizing and summarizing as reading strategies.
Writing: We listened to a story that was a personal narrative that had some fictional elements added to it. Our next piece of writing will be like that–a slightly fictionalized personal narrative. The fictional parts should be believable, but don’t have to be true events. Students also started prewriting.
A personal narrative, slightly fictionalized, is due Friday, October 31. Your student should be prewriting now.
Math: We practiced subtracting decimals today. Students also practiced math skills using Khan Academy.
Here’s some skills we’ve been working on lately:
Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes or more using MobyMax or Khan Academy.
Science: We learned more about the excretory system. We’ll also have a MiniQuiz tomorrow about the nervous, digestive, and respiratory systems.
Social Studies: Students worked in groups to learn about a specific American Indian tribe and what their culture was like. Homework is to finish the Reading Further 3 notes started in class (each student just has to finish the tribe assigned to their team, and does not have to finish all the tribe notes).
