November 14th, 2014
Class activities for Friday, November 14
Spelling: None today.
Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.
Reading: Students worked on Literature Circles projects that they will perform starting Tuesday in order to share their book with the class.
Writing: Students worked on revising today. A fiction story is due Friday, November 21. Your student should be revising by now.
Math: We reviewed multiplying one-digit numbers today, such as 38 x 7. Many students thought this skill was “easy.” In fact, many students did a double-take, but it is a lesson from our 5th grade curriculum. This is just a good reminder that for students that have working hard in class and practicing at home, they’ve made one difficult skills “easy” by practicing. For 5th graders that keep practicing, they will continue to be ready for skills before we introduce them in class.
Here are some of the skills we’ve been working on lately. These would be good skills to practice at home.
- Multiplying 2 digits by 2 digits with area models
- Multiplying 2 digits by 2 digits
- Multi-digit multiplication
- Powers of ten
Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes or more using MobyMax or Khan Academy.
Science: None today due to the half day schedule.
Social Studies: Students completed a reading challenge MiniQuiz over ideas from chapter 4 about explorers. We’ll have a test about this on Monday. The reading challenge can also be completed again at home to use as a study guide for the test. Your student can find the reading challenge here. Homework is to finish the notebook pages from chapter 4, including p. 25 started today.
