Class activities for Thursday, November 6

Spelling: Students finished making Words to Learn lists from words missed on the last spelling test.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: None today due to extra time with science.

Writing: Students worked on drafting their fiction story today.

Our next piece of writing, a fiction story, is due Friday, November 21. Your student should be drafting by now.

Math: Students completed a STAR Math test today.

Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes or more using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: Students modeled how traits are passed from grandparents to parents to children. Homework is to finish the “Generations of Traits” experiment if not finished in class.

Social Studies: None today due to the 5th Grade AR Points Celebration for students that met their Accelerated Reader points goal. Four students from our class met their goal.

Spelling: Students started making Words to Learn lists from words missed on the last spelling test. This will be your student’s spelling list for the next test.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today, students finished the reading day started on Monday. It was also a reading skills practice day using MobyMax.

Writing: We talked about using recurring details to organize a story and make it feel more connected.

Our next piece of writing, a fiction story, is due Friday, November 21. Your student should be prewriting or drafting by now.

Math: We practiced using rounding to estimate products. Students also used MobyMax to practice math skills.

Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes or more using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: Students made a bar graph of traits that were common with members of their team. Homework is to finish the traits bar graph if not done in class.

Social Studies: We learned about how Spain defeated Muslims in 1492 and how Spain sent Christopher Columbus to explore and spread Christianity to the New World.

Spelling: Students practiced sorting words ending in –er based on meaning.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on visualizing as a reading strategy.

Writing: We talked about adding details to slow the pace of an important scene, or removing details to speed up a scene that is not important to a story.

Our next piece of writing, a fiction story, is due Friday, November 21. Your student should be prewriting by now.

Math: We practiced using mental math to solve multiplication problems. Students also used Khan Academy to practice multiplication or other math skills.

Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes or more using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: Today we started to learn about genetics by looking at how different people have different traits.

Social Studies: We learned that several problems in Europe in the 1400s acted as push factors causing explorers to leave for the New World.
