Class activities for Friday, January 30

Friday, January 30th, 2015

Spelling: We practiced using the there/their/they’re and theirs/there’s homophones correctly today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading skills and AR practice day.

Writing: Students worked on drafting their essay today.

Here’s a sample that we started writing a literary essay together.

Math: Students practiced division today using Khan Academy. Here are some skills we’ve been working on lately:

Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes or more using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Also, we took our first loss today in Division Madness. Our record is 2-1. Today, we lost by one point. The class vowed to practice at least 5 minutes nightly with division facts.

Science: Students worked with a partner to conduct their own experiment. Homework is to finish analysis questions 5, 6, and 8 on p. 41. There will also be a MiniQuiz soon about investigations 5-8.

Social Studies: None today due to our math skills practice time.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students worked on prewriting conferences with a partner today. Homework is to be ready to start a draft essay tomorrow.

Math: None today due to the Jump Rope for Heart assembly. Here are some skills we’ve been working on lately:

Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes or more using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: Students worked with a partner to design their own experiment. Homework is to finish the experiment design and be ready to conduct the experiment tomorrow.

Social Studies: Students started learning about colonial regions. Homework is to finish notebook p. 39 if not done in class.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on forming questions as a reading strategy.

Writing: Students continued to prewrite their literary essays today. Homework is to finish prewriting for the literary essay if not done already.

Math: None today due to extra time finishing a science experiment. Here are some skills we’ve been working on lately:

Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes or more using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: Students worked on an experiment about collecting and using scientific data to test people. Homework is to finish analysis questions 1-4 on p. 40.

Spelling: We practiced spelling words that have silent letters and forming plurals by changing the letter f to a v, as in the word wolves or leaves.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: None today due to reviewing how to debate politely, and how to prove opinions using evidence.

Writing: Students selected books today to use for literary essays. We also started prewriting today. Homework is to finish prewriting for the literary essay.

Math: Students worked on a district math test today. Here are some skills we’ve been working on lately:

Science: We finished learning about quantitative (can be counted) and qualitative (what something is like) data. Homework is to finish analysis questions 1-5 on pp. 35-36.

Social Studies: Students completed a test today about early English settlements.

Writing: Students continued to practice writing literary essays today using a short story we read last week.
