Class activities for Monday, February 29

Monday, February 29th, 2016

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on inferring and determining importance as reading strategies.

Writing: Today students surveyed the class to get data to support the letter topic. Today was also a day to continue to draft the letter. Homework is work on writing for at least 15 minutes.

This persuasive letter project (more details here, here’s a checklist, here’s an example letter we wrote together) is due Friday, March 4.

Math: We practice the standard method of multiplying today in class and at Khan Academy. Here are some skills we’ve been working on lately:

Homework is to practice MobyMax Math or Khan Academy for at least 15 minutes.

Science: We learned that the earth is four times bigger than the moon by reviewing our last experiment.

Social Studies: None today.

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Friday.

Reading: Students completed a STAR Reading test today.

Writing: We wrote a persuasive letter together to practice learning the parts of a persuasive letter. Students also started drafting and collecting data today. Homework is work on writing for at least 15 minutes.

This persuasive letter project (more details here and here’s a checklist) about an idea to improve our school or community is due Friday, March 4.

Math: None today due to musical rehearsal. Here are some skills we’ve been working on lately:

Homework is to practice MobyMax Math or Khan Academy for at least 15 minutes.

Science: None today due to our musical rehearsal.

Social Studies: None today due to our musical rehearsal.

Notes:

  • The 4th Grade Musical is Thursday (unless postponed due to weather). Students need to meet in our class at 6:15 pm, wearing something nice in black or white.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Friday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students continued prewriting their persuasive letter about an idea to improve our school or community. Students completed prewriting conferences to get comments from a peer. Homework is to continue prewriting about these ideas for at least 15 minutes.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on visualizing as a reading strategy.

Writing: Students started prewriting their persuasive letter about an idea to improve our school or community. Today, students were planning the details of their idea, why it is a good idea, and what core democratic values would serve as proof that their idea is worth considering. Homework is to finish prewriting about these ideas for at least 15 minutes.

Math: We practiced two-digit multiplication using the standard method today in class at at Khan Academy. Here are some skills we’ve been working on lately:

Class activities for Friday, February 19

Spelling: We reviewed common spelling patterns for the /s/ sound: s, ss, sc, cy, ci, ce

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Friday.

Reading: Today was an AR and reading skills today. Students work on MobyMax Science for today’s reading practice.

Writing: We finished reviewing important core democratic values today. Homework is to think of an idea to improve our school or community.

Our next writing project is a persuasive letter (more details here and here’s a checklist) about an idea to improve our school or community. This essay will be due is due Friday, March 4.

Math: We practiced two-digit multiplication using partial products today. Students also worked on multiplication or other math skills at MobyMax. Here are some skills we’ve been working on lately:

Homework is to practice MobyMax Math or Khan Academy for at least 15 minutes.

Science: Students received space science books and we started an experiment to test how much bigger the earth is than the moon. We’ll continue this experiment next week.

Social Studies: We used this time to finish learning about core democratic values for our next writing project.
