Class activities for Thursday, February 18

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Friday.

Reading: We read our shared reading book today, Esperanza Rising, due to having art today.

Writing: Today we wrote notes about the core democratic values of common good, equality and diversity.

Our next writing project is a persuasive letter (more details here and here’s a checklist) about an idea to improve our school or community. This essay will be due is due Friday, March 4.

Math: We practiced looking for hidden questions in number stories. Students also worked on multiplication or other math skills at MobyMax. Here are some skills we’ve been working on lately:

Homework is to practice MobyMax Math or Khan Academy for at least 15 minutes.

Science: Students worked on a district test about matter.

Social Studies: We used this time to learn about core democratic values, which will be used in our next writing project.

Spelling: Students made Words to Learn lists from words missed on the last spelling test. These words are your student’s spelling words to practice for the next spelling test.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Friday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Our next writing project is a persuasive letter (more details here and here’s a checklist) about an idea to improve our school or community. This essay will be due is due Friday, March 4.

This week, we have been reviewing core democratic values, including life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, and justice. These values can be used to help make an essay more persuasive.

Math: We practiced rounding to estimate products. Students also worked on multiplication or other math skills at MobyMax. Some students practiced two-digit by two-digit multiplication today. Here are some skills we’ve been working on lately:

Homework is to practice MobyMax Math or Khan Academy for at least 15 minutes.

Science: None today. We’ll have extra science time tomorrow as we work on a district matter test.

Social Studies: We reviewed the homework and class assignment about the meaning of the phrases in the preamble to the constitution.

Reading: Students practiced informational reading skills today using MobyMax.

Writing: Our next writing project is a persuasive letter (more details here and here’s a checklist) about an idea to improve our school or community. This essay will be due is due Friday, March 4.

Math: None today due to extra time with science. We’ll have extra math time later in the week. Here are some skills we’ve been working on lately:

Homework is to practice MobyMax Math or Khan Academy for at least 15 minutes.

Science: We finished learning about matter today. Students “fogged up” a mirror to see how water vapor can condense into tiny droplets onto the cold mirror. A test about matter and measuring matter will be tomorrow.

Social Studies: Student groups started translating the preamble to the constitution into kid-friendly language. Homework is to finish p. 9 of the preamble notes page. We’ll work on p. 10 in class.

Feb Factor logo.jpgOur Feb Factor Valentine’s party was so good, it was scary, literally! We decorated Valentine’s bags, passed out our cards and ate sloppy joes, crackers, fruit and veggies.

Feb Factor games included sticking conversation hearts, slurping gummy hearts, passing love notes, and carrying marshmallow Peeps!Thanks to everyone who donated food and supplies; we had more than enough! A big thanks to all the family members that helped with serving food, cleanup and games!

Feb Factor 2016

 

Writing: Students edited and published their essays for a short tim today.

A literary essay will be due Tuesday, February 16; here’s a sample essay and here’s an example essay we wrote together.

Math: Students worked on multiplication or other math skills at Khan Academy today. Some students worked on multiplying tens, such as 50 x 30.

Spelling: We reviewed rules for when to capitalize today:

  1. For specific names.
  2. For specific places.
  3. For titles.
  4. For days of the week, months, holidays, but not seasons.

Cursive: Cursive pages 52-54 are available and due on Thursday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students edited their essays for periods, run-on sentences, capitals, titles, and indenting paragraphs. Homework is to work on writing for at least 15 minutes.

A literary essay will be due Tuesday, February 16; here’s a sample essay and here’s an example essay we wrote together. Students should be revising and editing by now.

Math: We continued to practice multiplying two-digit numbers using arrays at Khan Academy. Some students haven’t mastered this skill yet and might need to continue working on it at home. Here are some skills we’ve been working on lately:

Homework is to practice MobyMax Math or Khan Academy for at least 15 minutes.

Science: Today was a physical education and nutrition lesson about getting 60 minutes of exercise a day, getting rest from screens, and getting 9-11 hours of sleep.

Social Studies: We talked about what our school, community, and country would be like without rules or laws. Homework is to finish the Life without Laws notes page started in class.

  • Our Feb Factor Valentine’s party is Thursday, February 11 from 9-noon. Here’s our volunteer list. We still need a few volunteers to help with serving food and games.
