Spelling: Students started making Words to Learn lists from words missed on their last spelling test. This is your student’s spelling list for the next test.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles and we continued to observe a group trying to have a good discussion. This will be our last practice day and hopefully students will put into practice what they have seen about good discussion habits.

Writing: We talked writing an interesting lead by starting with talking, a visual detail, or some action.

Students also started drafting today. Our next piece of writing is a fiction narrative, due Monday, November 28. Homework is to work on writing for at least 15 minutes.

Math: We practiced drawing pictures to help solve number stories. Students also worked on math skills using MobyMax Math. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy and to level up on any remaining multiplication skills (shown below).

Here are some Khan Academy topics your students should be finished with by now:

Science: We reviewed the last experiment about human variation. We talked about how humans can vary slightly, but science can still make conclusions that apply to all people. Note: any corrections to the last science quiz are due on Friday. Quiz answers can be found at JupiterGrades in the Tests & Lessons section.

Social Studies: Students worked on the Chapter 2 test started earlier. Students not finished can work on the test at home or recess.

Notes:

Our Mission:
All students in Room 130 will do their best and get ready for 6th grade.

Class activities for Wednesday, November 9

Wednesday, November 9th, 2016

Spelling: None today due students getting new seats and team captains.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles. In an effort to improve the quality of our discussions, we used the fishbowl method to observe good discussions. Students sat in a circle around a group, and we watched them having a discussion. Hopefully, students learn good habits by watching others and will have better discussions on our next discussion day.

Writing: We talked writing a fiction story so that it’s clear what the main character wants and what the problem is that needs to be solved.

Students also continued prewriting today. Our next piece of writing is a fiction narrative, due Monday, November 28. Homework is to finish prewriting, including planning the characters, plot of the story, and the settings.

Math: We practiced multi-digit multiplication again today using Khan Academy. Students that previously leveled-up on this skill worked with a partner to help them with their multiplicatin skills. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy and to level up on any remaining multiplication skills (shown below).

Here are some Khan Academy topics your students should be finished with by now:

Science: None today. Homework from Monday was for students to finish analysis questions 1-6 on p. 31. Also, any corrections to the last science quiz are due on Friday. Quiz answers can be found at JupiterGrades in the Tests & Lessons section.

Social Studies: We used this time to discuss the election results and to review branches of government and separation of powers.

Class activities for Monday, November 7

Monday, November 7th, 2016

Spelling: None today due to our monthly class meeting.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We talked about the important of prewriting today. If someone wanted to bake cookies, they should first take time to gather ingredients and plan their recipe. If someone started baking without having the proper ingredients, the cookies would not turn out very good. In the same way, prewriting is a time for students to gather ideas and plan the events of a story. Without prewriting, the student may leave out important “ingredients” that will make the story seem “half-baked.”

Students also started prewriting today. Our next piece of writing is a fiction narrative, due Monday, November 28. Homework is to work on prewriting, including planning the characters, plot of the story, and the settings.

Math: We practiced multi-digit multiplication today using Khan Academy. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy and to level up on any remaining multiplication skills (shown below).

Here are some Khan Academy topics your students should be finished with by now:

Science: Students completed an experiment about human variation related to sense of touch. Homework is for students to finish analysis questions 1-6 on p. 31. Also, any corrections to the last science quiz are due on Friday. Quiz answers can be found at JupiterGrades in the Tests & Lessons section.

Social Studies: Students started working on the Chapter 2 social studies test today and will finish it next time.
