Class activities for Monday, October 9

Monday, October 9th, 2017

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 13-15 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: We started reading about how science creates new knowledge. We also started reading about motion. Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; students read silently and wrote notes about their reading.

Writing: Students worked on revising conferences today. A personal narrative is due Monday, October 16, and the minimum length is one page. Your student should be almost done revising by now. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes.

Math: We talked about drawing pictures when solving number stories. Students also worked on MobyMax Math today. Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We read about the lower gravity on the moon and how it affects how astronauts move and how much they weigh.

Social Studies: We started learning about what type of government we have. We learned that our government is constitutional, a democracy, and is a republic, meaning we elect representatives.

Character Strength: We are learning about Perspective for a second week.

  • Have you helped your student plan a Daily Homework Time? This is a daily (Monday through Thursday) time of 40 minutes for students to work on math, writing, math facts, cursive, or other homework. Maybe it’s right after school, or at 5 pm, or right after dinner. The idea is that your student is working each day on something to make them smarter. Here is a sample schedule and more ideas.

Spelling: We practiced spelling words that have silent letters.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 10-12 are available and are due Monday.

Reading: None today due to the half-day schedule.

Writing: None today due to the half-day schedule.

A personal narrative is due Friday, October 13, and the minimum length is one page. Your student should be revising by now.

Math: None today due to the half-day schedule.

Science: None today due to art.

Social Studies: Students completed a MiniQuiz about the purpose of the government shown in the Preamble to the Constitution. We also talked about creating a welcoming physical environment in our class.

Character Strength: We are learning this week about Perspective.

  • Note that due to evidence of a threat discovered at our school, and to keep our students safe, all student backpacks were searched today with the help of school staff and the Grand Blanc Township Police.

Class activities for Thursday, October 5

Thursday, October 5th, 2017

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 10-12 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: We read more about earthquakes today. Today was also a reading day in Literature Circles. Students read silently and wrote down questions, connections, important passages, and illustrations that they thought of while reading.

Writing: We talked about using strong verbs to help a reader picture the action better. Students also worked on revising today.

A personal narrative is due Friday, October 13, and the minimum length is one page. Your student should be revising by now. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes.

Math: We talked about solving division facts by multiplying instead. For example, to solve 10 / 5, just ask, “What times 5 is 10?” Students also worked multiplication and division skills in MobyMax Math today. Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: Students read about space with a guest teacher using MobyMax Science.

Social Studies: Students read about government with a guest teacher using MobyMax Social Studies.

Character Strength: We are learning this week about Perspective.

Class activities for Wednesday, October 4

Wednesday, October 4th, 2017

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 10-12 are available and were due Friday.

Reading: We started reading an article about earthquakes. Students also got new Literature Circles books. These are books students will reading silently, while taking notes, and will discuss in groups.

Writing: We talked about using precise nouns to help a reader understand the writing better. Students also worked on revising today by changing words or sentences or finishing unfinished ideas.

A personal narrative is due Friday, October 13, and the minimum length is one page. Your student should be finished with their full-page draft and working on making changes by now. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes.

Math: Students worked on finishing up multiplication and division skills in MobyMax Math today. Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We read today about how spacesuits are used to keep astronauts safe in space. We also started reading about the gravity on the moon.

Social Studies: None today due to art.

Class activities for Tuesday, October 3

Tuesday, October 3rd, 2017

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 10-12 are available and were due Friday.

Reading: We finished reading about fast and slow processes that can change the earth. We also talked about rereading a text to understand it better, and practiced how to compare and contrast ideas.

Writing: We talked about using the right word in the right spot to help a reader understand the writing better. Today was also the final drafting work day. A personal narrative is due Friday, October 13, and the minimum length is one page. Your student should be finishing their draft tonight. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes and to finish drafting.

Math: We learned about special quotients today:

  • Anything divided by 1 is itself
  • Anything divided by itself is 1 (except zero)
  • Anything divided by zero is undefined

Students also used MobyMax Math to practice multiplication and division skills we’ve been working on recently. Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: Today we reviewed our last experiment about what a picnic would be like on the moon.

Social Studies: We reviewed how the government carries out the Constitution. We’ll have a MiniQuiz about the Preamble to the Constitution soon.
