Class activities for Wednesday, November 15

Wednesday, November 15th, 2017

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 30-32 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: None today due to the half day schedule.

Writing: None today due to the half day schedule. Our next piece of writing is a fiction story due Monday, November 27. Your student should be finished with their draft story at this point and ready to revise. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes.

Math: None today due to the half day schedule.

Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: Students worked on their Space Fashion Show scripts again today. (more details and a sample script). The Space Fashion Show is our final project of our space unit. Students are working in groups to write a fashion show script that tells about the sun, moon, or earth (click here to find your student’s group script). One student from each group will “model” a costume of the sun, moon, or earth. The Space Fashion Show is Tuesday, November 21 at 2 pm in the small gym. Family members are invited!

Social Studies: We reviewed powers of the legislative branch and wrote notes about the executive branch.

Character Strength: We are learning about gratitude this week and next.

Tuesday, November 14th, 2017

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 30-32 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: We visited the book fair during our reading time today.

 

Writing: We reviewed adding “inner story” details about thoughts and feelings. We also reviewed adding visual details to make settings seam real.

Students also worked on drafting. Our next piece of writing is a fiction story due Monday, November 27. Your student should be drafting at this point and should be finishing their story soon. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes and to finish drafting.

Math: Students worked on a STAR Math test today.

Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Monday, November 13th, 2017

Spelling: We talked about breaking words into syllables or pieces to help spell longer words.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 30-32 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: Students completed STAR Reading tests today. Here are the class results so far this year. We dropped a little, but still have a large positive trend and are on schedule to pass our yearly class goal early.

Writing: We talked about adding “inner story” details about thoughts and feelings. These are things that are inside a character and won’t be known unless the writer adds the details.

Students also worked on drafting. Our next piece of writing is a fiction story due Monday, November 27. Your student should be drafting at this point and should have over half a page typed. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes.

Math: Students continued to work on rounding and place value skills at Khan Academy. We are close to moving to the next topic in math, and some students still have unfinished rounding and place value skills. Ask your student to show you their progress so far this year.

Spelling: We reviewed the idea that idioms are phrases that have a hidden meaning. We also reviewed common spelling patterns for the long /i/ sound.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 25, 26, 29 are available and were due today.

Reading: We finished reading a drama about a frog princess today. Today was reading skills practice day using MobyMax.

Writing: We talked about writing visual details to show what the setting looks like. Students also worked on drafting. Our next piece of writing is a fiction story due Monday, November 27. Your student should be drafting at this point and should have about half a page typed. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes if needed.

Math: Today was a day to catch up on any unfinished place value skills at Khan Academy.

Spelling: We learned that homographs are words that are spelled the same, but have a different meaning and may have a different pronunciation. Can you read these homographs correctly the first time?
