Class activities for Wednesday, November 8

Wednesday, November 8th, 2017

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 25, 26, 29 are available and are due Friday. We also had a cursive quiz today.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Students read dramas and wrote notes about their thinking. Some groups worked on making connections about things the text reminded them of.

Writing: We talked again today about how to make characters seem real by adding realistic sounding talking and actions. Nice characters should sound nice. Mean characters should say mean things.

Students also worked on prewriting. Our next piece of writing is a fiction story due Monday, November 27. Your student should be finishing prewriting at this point. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes and to finish prewriting.

Math: We practiced using place value to compare numbers today at Khan Academy.

Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We learned about how the moon’s revolution around the earth changes how the moon looks in our sky. Moon phases change in a pattern that lasts about a month.

Social Studies: We talked about how proactive students stop and think after something difficult happens.

Character Strength: We are learning about Bravery for a second week.

Monday, November 6th, 2017

Spelling: We reviewed common spelling patterns for the long /i/ sound.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 25, 26, 29 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: We are focusing on animal stories again this week, and the genre focus is dramas. Today, we ready about a diligent ant and a lazy grasshopper. We also learned about on asking questions, what a drama is, and how to use antonyms to solve unknown words.

Writing: We talked today about how to make characters seem real by adding visual details to describe them, showing how they act, writing dialogue for them, and showing how the other characters react to them.

Students also started prewriting today. Our next piece of writing is a fiction story due Monday, November 27. Your student should be prewriting at this point, including planning characters, places, and what happens in the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes.

Math: We practiced place value skills today, focusing on how to multiply and divide by 10.

Spelling: None today due to the Hawaiian Beach Bash.

A personal narrative is due Monday, November 6. Your student should be publishing at this point. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes if needed.

Here are some skills we’ve been working on lately:

Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy if needed.

Science: We learned about how the moon rotates and revolves around the earth in about a month. Students worked on a crossword puzzle about these ideas. Homework is to finish the crossword if not done in class.

Social Studies: We learned about the three branches of government and what their responsiblities are.

Character Strength: We are learning about Bravery this week.

Notes:

  • Today was our Hawaiian Beach Bash! Thanks to all the family members that donated money or food, or helped with food, games, or clean up!

This is a daily (Monday through Thursday) time of 40 minutes for students to work on math, writing, math facts, cursive, or other homework. Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 22-24 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: We read a folktale about how some birds delivered a secret message. Students also practiced foundational reading skills using MobyMax today.

Writing: Today was a publishing day for adding a title, resolving comments and making the writing look nice to read.

A personal narrative is due Monday, November 6. Your student should be publishing at this point. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes.

Math: We practiced skills about place value and multiplying and dividing by 10 at Khan Academy.
