Class activities for Friday, December 7

Friday, December 7th, 2018

Spelling: None today. We used this time to work on our Leadership Notebooks.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading skills practice time using MobyMax.

Writing: We talked about being consistent with verb tense in a story. Most stories are written in past tense, but some are in present tense. It doesn’t matter which is chosen as long as the writer sticks to the same tense throughout the story.

Students also worked on revising today. A narrative story (personal or fiction) is due Sunday, December 16. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should have their draft done by now, but several students in our class are still behind.

Math: None today due to a class meeting. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: None today.

Social Studies: We learned about some holiday traditions from Mexico.

Character Strength: We are learning about kindness this week.

Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should have their draft done by now, but several students in our class are behind.

Class activities for Wednesday, December 5

Wednesday, December 5th, 2018

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading skills practice day using MobyMax.

Writing: We talked about writing a “waterfall” lead. This is where a writer starts the story in a place that isn’t too far from the problem of the story. The waterfall is the interesting part of the story, and it shouldn’t take too long for that part to show up in the writing.

Students also worked on drafting. A narrative story (personal or fiction) is due Sunday, December 16. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should have their draft done by now.

Math: We worked on two-digit multiplication again today. There are a few students that are still foggy on the concept. Check with your student and see how they are doing, or even have them show you how to multiply 62 x 25 and see how they are doing. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: None today due to the late start.

Social Studies: None today due to the late start.

Character Strength: We are learning about kindness this week.

Class activities for Tuesday, December 4

Tuesday, December 4th, 2018

Spelling: Today was a preview of upcoming spelling words.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Fridays.

Reading: We used our reading time today to have an evidence circle for science. Students read pieces of evidence and then used the evidence to write a scientific argument.

Writing: We talked about not talking too long to introduce the main problem or most interesting part of a story. One way to do that is to make sure that the details in the beginning match the problem of the story, and making sure there aren’t a lot of extra details not connected to the problem. Students also worked on drafting.

A narrative story (personal or fiction) is due Sunday, December 16. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should have their draft nearly done by now.

Math: None today. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We used evidence to make and support a claim about how to grow healthy plants. Homework is to finish notebook pp. 78-79 if not done in class.

Social Studies: Students completed a test about explorers.

Character Strength: We are learning about kindness this week.
