Class activities for Wednesday, November 20

Wednesday, November 20th, 2019

Spelling: Students completed a spelling and skill test today.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 33-35 are due Friday.

Reading: We finished reading an article about animal adaptations. We also talked about summarizing, main idea, and key details as reading strategies.

Writing: Students completed editing conferences today by writing comments to a partner.

Students also worked on editing their own writing.

A fiction story is due Sunday, November 24. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should be editing for spelling, capitals, sentence sense, paragraphs, and other mistakes at this point.

Math: We practiced multiplying using partial products today. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy. Our class mastery level is 70%. We are getting closer to our goal of 96%. But 12 students are under 60% mastery, meaning that many students have missing and unfinished skills. Ask your student to show you if they have their skills completed.

Science: We talked about how animals in a rain forest might use their senses to get information about their environment.

Social Studies: We learned about how the legislative branch can check the power of the President by approving his appointments.

Character Strength: We are learning about gratitude this week.

Spelling: We reviewed common patterns for the /k/ sound. This will be the skill tested in tomorrow’s spelling test. If your student hasn’t been practicing their Words to Learn list, it might be too late for tomorrow’s test, but you could start having your student plan out when they will practice their spelling words a few times a week.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 33-35 are due Friday.

Reading: We started reading an article about animal adaptations.

Writing: We practiced varying sentence beginnings so that sentences are starting with different words, not the same word over and over.

Students also started editing.

Math: We practiced estimating products multiplying using rounding today. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We learned more about our new topic of vision and light. Our study problem is about how geckos see in the dark and how too much light could harm them.

Social Studies: Students completed a MiniQuiz today about branches of government.

Character Strength: We are learning about gratitude this week.

Spelling: Students practiced when to use among and between in sentences.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 30-32 are available and were due today, and pp. 33-35 are due Friday.

Reading: Students finished performing their monologue passages, reading aloud with speed, tone, accuracy and volume.

Writing: We talked about varying sentence beginnings so that many sentences are starting with the same word.

Students also worked on revising.

A fiction story is due Sunday, November 24. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should have a full page written by now and adding more during revising.

Math: We practiced multiplying using the distributive property, which involves breaking large numbers apart and multiplying the pieces. For example, 352 x 6 can be broken into 300 x 6, 50 x 6, and 6 x 6. Multiply, then add the pieces. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: Students received new science notebooks today and we previewed our next topic about vision and light. Have your student show you their rocks and fossils notebook if you want to see what they learned about in our last topic.

Social Studies: None today.

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 30-32 are available and are due Monday.

Reading: Students performed their monologue passage, reading aloud with speed, tone, accuracy and volume. Remaining students will read Monday.

Writing: Students completed revising conferences by making comments and suggestions to a partner.

Today was also a day for students to continue revising.

A fiction story is due Sunday, November 24. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should be finished with their draft (a full page) and revising by now.

Math: None today due to the half day schedule. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: None today due to the half day schedule.

Social Studies: We started a leader lesson about setting goals as a way to begin with the end in mind. A successful person sets goals so they can hit what they are aiming for. They also focus on important goals first. If a person chases two rabbits, they catch none!

Class activities for Thursday, November 14

Thursday, November 14th, 2019

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 30-32 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: Students have been practicing for the last two days reading aloud with speed, tone, accuracy and volume. Students will read a passage to the class tomorrow to practice reading fluency. Homework is to practice reading their selected passage aloud at home.

Writing: We talked more about writing balanced scenes that include a mix of talking, action, and visual details.

Today was also a day for students to revise their drafting by adding details or taking out parts that don’t fit.

A fiction story is due Sunday, November 24. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should be finished with their draft by tonight so they have time to revise and make improvements.

Math: We practiced multiplying 3 and 4 digit numbers using area models today. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: None today due to the half day schedule.

Social Studies: None today due to the half day schedule.
