January 28th, 2020
Spelling: None today.
Cursive: Cursive pp. 53-54 are available and are due Friday. These are our last cursive worksheets of the year. For the remainder of the year, our weekly assignment will be 10 cursive sentences, with seven or more words each.
Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles.
Writing: We finished the conclusion of our practice literary essay and started writing another practice essay. Here is a literary essay written in a past year using the elements of an essay. And here is an example essay. A literary essay is due Tuesday, February 11.
Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. There is nothing to work on for our essay project yet, but students could be making any final changes to their adventure story.
Math: We started working on our next topic about factors, multiples, and patterns. Today we practiced finding factor pairs. For example, the factor pairs for 24 are 1×24, 2×12, 3×8, 4×6. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.
Even though we are moving on, several students haven’t mastered 2-digit multiplication, which is a very important skill. It would be worthwhile to have your student continue to practice this skill at home. It will make the rest of the year and next year much easier. You can check Khan Academy or contact me if you want to see how your student is doing with multiplication.
Science: Students worked more on designing an experiment to test the sense of touch, smell, or hearing. Homework is to finish p. 3, if not done in class, and to bring any necessary materials for the experiment tomorrow.
Social Studies: We started a new topic about economics. Today, we talked about how people have unlimited wants, but there are limited resources, so people can’t have everything they want.
Character Strength: We are learning about the #OtherPeopleMatter mindset this week.
