Spelling: We practiced writing irregular verbs and base words today (e.g., keep/kept, speak/spoke, drive/drove).

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on summarizing as a reading strategy.

Writing: We talked more about prewriting the plot in the beginning, middle, and ending. We also talked about having a few main characters and not too many, and also about summarizing the problem so that it’s clear what the story is about.

Students continued prewriting for our next piece of writing, another fiction narrative, due Friday, December 16. Homework is to work on writing for at least 15 minutes. Your student should be prewriting the plot, characters, and setting at this point.

Math: Students continued to review division skills, focusing on dividing with dividends and quotients that contain a zero. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Here are some Khan Academy topics your students should be finished with by now:

• Divide by 1-digit numbers (no remainders)
• Zeros in the dividend (no remainders)
• Zeros in the quotient (no remainders)

Science: Students completed the experiment they designed yesterday. Homework is to complete analysis questions 5, 6, and 8 on p. 41.

Social Studies: We read about how Jamestown was backed by investors who were looking to make a profit from goods produced at Jamestown.

Science: Students started working on the Data Toss Part 2 experiment. Today, partners had the task of designing their own experiment testing something about throwing and catching a ball, writing a procedure, writing a data table, and making a hypothesis for the experiment. Tomorrow, students will complete their experiment. Homework is to finish planning the experiment and writing the procedure, data table, and hypothesis, if not done in class.

Social Studies: Each team received a poinsettia to take care of. We learned more about the poinsettia, including why it is named that way, where it is from, and if it is really poisonous (spoiler alert: it’s not). This is part of our activities leading up to our Mexican Fiesta in December.

Students also worked on editing conferences today. Our next piece of writing is a fiction narrative, due Monday, November 28. Homework is to work on writing for at least 15 minutes. Your student should be editing for capitals, paragraphs, periods, run-on sentences, spelling, etc.

Math: Some students practiced 1-digit division today using Khan Academy. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.
