Writing: We reviewed the idea of making dialogue important to the story. Dialogue should help tell the story. If some of the dialogue is just “chit chat,” and not important, then those parts can be removed so the story is organized better.

Students also continued to work on their draft.

A fiction story is due Monday, December 12. Your student should be drafting at this point, and over half done with their story draft.

Math: We learned about graphing points and solving problems on coordinate graphs.

Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes or more using MobyMax or Khan Academy, and to finish level up on these skills if not done in class:

• Coordinate plane word problems in the first quadrant

Science: Students completed a science experiment today that modeled how traits can help an animal survive in its environment. Students will graph and analyze the data from this experiment tomorrow.

Social Studies: We learned true story of how Squanto helped create the first Thanksgiving. He was captured as a slave and sold to monks in Spain. They taught him Spanish and released him to go home. He learned English before sailing back to America. Since he knew English, he could help the English Pilgrims learn how to plant crops and survive in the New World. Squanto and the Pilgrims ate those crops and more at the first Thanksgiving feast.

Writing: We practiced freewriting for details today. Students wrote for three minutes without stopping, thinking of details for their stories. Then then highlighted parts of their freewriting that were worth keeping for their draft.
