Class activities for Monday, December 3

Monday, December 3rd, 2018

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Fridays. 

Reading: Today we read some narrative poetry about people that were motivated to achieve their goals.

Writing: We talked more about how complete scenes have all three story details: talking, action and visual details. Students also worked on drafting.

A narrative story (personal or fiction) is due Sunday, December 16. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should have their draft about half done by now.

Math: We practiced two-digit multiplying again today. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: None today.

Social Studies: Started our new topic about the Spanish settlements started in America. We will have a test about explorers tomorrow (a glitch prevented us from doing this today).

Character Strength: We are learning about kindness this week.

Spelling: We worked on our Leadership Notebooks. Today we added something to celebrate, such as an award, a good grade, or a goal reached. We also started to think about a goal to achieve for this marking period.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Fridays. 

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students wrote prewriting comments to a partner and also worked on drafting.

A narrative story (personal or fiction) is due Sunday, December 16. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should have their draft started by now.

Math: We practiced two-digit multiplying today. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: None today.

Social Studies: We reviewed Chapter 2 about European Explorers. We will have a test about this topic on Monday.

Character Strength: We are learning about the #OtherPeopleMatter mindset this week.

Class activities for Wednesday, November 28

Wednesday, November 28th, 2018

Spelling: Students worked on a writing log and reflection about their last piece of writing.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Fridays. 

Reading: We read some folktales today about people that made a plan and solved a problem.

Writing: We talked about writing balanced scenes that have some each of talking, action, and visual details. Balanced scenes keep switching to different details, including all three in every scene.

Students also continued prewriting today. A narrative story is due Sunday, December 16. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should be finished with prewriting their ideas by tonight.

Math: We practiced multiplying with regrouping today. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We used a simulation to see how soil can be changed if decomposers are removed.

Social Studies: None today.

Tuesday, November 27th, 2018

Spelling: Students reviewed their last writing grades and comments and wrote some notes in a writing log.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Fridays. 

Reading: Today was a reading skills practice day using MobyMax Reading.

Writing: We talked about some options for our next piece of writing:

  • Students may write another fiction story using their imagination.
  • Students may write a personal narrative about an event that happened to themselves.
  • Students may write a fictionalized personal narrative.

Students also started prewriting today. A narrative story is due Sunday, December 16. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should be prewriting their ideas at this point.

Math: None today due to art. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We read about how soil is made from many types of matter that have been broken down by decomposers. Homework is to finish notebook p. 62 if not done in class.

Social Studies: We read about the plants and animals that have moved between the Old and New Worlds during the Columbian Exchange.

Character Strength: We are learning about the #OtherPeopleMatter mindset this week.

Today we learned about how Squanto helped the Pilgrims during their first year in the New World.
