Class activities for Thursday, January 25

Spelling: Today was a spelling and skill test.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 48-51 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: We talked about rereading, thinking about author point of view, and using synonyms as reading strategies. We also started to read a biography about a civil rights leader named W.W. Law.

Writing: We started writing a literary essay (here’s a sample) together. For this project, students will select a picture book and write an essay about the theme or big idea of the book.

A literary essay will be due Monday, February 12.

Math: We practiced two digit multiplication again today and worked on it at Khan Academy. Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We reviewed our recent experiments about measuring weight and mass.

Social Studies: We learned about how scarcity causes people to have to make choices because they don’t have enough resources.

Character Strength: We learned about hope and optimism again today.

Spelling: We made a mini poster about rules for capitalizing words. Also, tomorrow will be a spelling test, with a skill test about digraphs.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 48-51 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on inferring as a reading strategy.

Writing: We started working on our next writing project, a literary essay (here’s a sample). Students will select a picture book and write an essay about the theme or big idea of the book.

Social Studies: Today was a leadership lesson about beginning with the end in mind. We talked about choosing important principles and then living life according to those principles.

Spelling: We practiced writing words with digraphs. This is the skill tested on Thursday’s spelling test.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 48-51 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading skills practice day using MobyMax Reading Stories.

Writing: Today was a publishing day and the final work day for each student’s Google Site gamebook. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes and to finish their Choose Your Own Adventure story if needed.

This project is due today, Tuesday, January 23.

Math: Students worked on multiplication skills or got a head start on division skills today. Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: Students used a balance to measure the mass of several objects. Homework is to finish the Using Balances experiment if not done in class.

Spelling: We practiced using their and theirs in sentences. We learned that possessive pronouns (his, hers, yours, theirs, mine, ours) don’t have apostrophes.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 48-51 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: Today we read a biography about a woman who protested pollution in a West Virginia coal mining town.

Writing: Today was an editing day for students to work on their Google Site gamebook. Partners helped each other edit. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes and to finish editing with a family member or partner at home. Students should also finish any leftover parts of their draft, if needed.

This project is due Tuesday, January 23.

Math: We practiced multiplying with regrouping again today. Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: Students used spring scales to weigh several objects. Homework is to finish the Using Spring Scales experiment if not done in class.

Social Studies: None today due to art.

Spelling: We practiced using there/their/they’re homophones correctly.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 45-47 are available and were due today.

Reading: Today was a reading and discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Today was a final drafting day for students to work on their Google Site gamebook.

Our current writing project is a Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook. Students are writing a fiction adventure story with choices that the reader can make. Each choice can change how the story turns out. Students will publish their adventure as a website at Google Sites. See below for more details. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes and to finish drafting, including having a beginning, middle, and an ending.

This project is due Tuesday, January 23.

Science: We finished writing notes about how states of matter can change by adding or removing heat. We also practiced measuring weight using a spring scale.
