Class activities for Tuesday, March 17

We had 20 students working with us today! Nice job, everyone!

Reading: Today’s assignment was to practice reading with Epic books, and with MobyMax TestPrep Reading Skills. Reading is at 9:00 am daily.

Writing: Today’s assignment was to continue drafting their novel today. Students should have 90% of their word goal completed by the end of today. Several students are still behind. Check how your student is doing here. We work on writing at 1 pm daily.

The novel project is due Wednesday, March 25. Homework is to work on writing for at least 15 minutes daily during the week.

Novel Writing Project 2020

The final piece of the 3rd Marking Period will be our final fiction project of the year. Students will write and publish their own novel! Each student will write their own novel, with a word goal minimum of 1,000-3,000 words, based on their reading level (each student’s minimum writing goal is equal to their reading level multiplied by 500). The novels will be written in Google Docs (docs.google.com) to make use of the word count feature. Final novels will be uploaded to Lulu.com and published as paperback books, which can be purchased for reasonable prices. So yes, students will actually write and publish their own novels. This project is based on the National Novel Writing Month Young Writers program.

Math: We practiced three angle skills today. Check the Online School Agenda for the skills we worked on and a tutorial video I made. We work on math at 11 am. Our class improved from 13% to 40% complete in one day today! Good job, hard workers!

Science: We reviewed wavelength and amplitude again today with video, then a quiz. Check the Online School Agenda for what we did, videos students could watch, and the quiz to try again if anyone wants to! We work on science at 10 am.

Social Studies: We reviewed supply, demand, and price, then took a quiz. Check the Online School Agenda for specifics. Social studies is at 10:30 daily.

Reading: Today’s assignment was to practice reading with MobyMax Reading Stories and Foundational Reading. Reading is at 9:00 am daily.

Writing: Today’s assignment was to continue drafting their novel today. Students should have 80% of their word goal completed by the end of today. Twenty students worked on writing from home today! We work on writing at 1 pm daily.

The novel project is due Wednesday, March 25. Homework is to work on writing for at least 15 minutes daily during the week.

Science: We used a simulation and some videos to learn about wavelength. A short wavelength makes a high pitch, and a long wavelength makes a low pitch. Check the Online School Agenda for what we did, videos students could watch, and the notebook pages for students to complete. We work on science at 10 am.

Social Studies: We reviewed supply, demand, and price. Students could read along with me to a page of text about those ideas, and there was a note page to complete. Check the Online School Agenda for specifics. Social studies is at 10:30 daily.

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: None until we return to school.

Reading: Today’s assignment was to practice reading with MobyMax Reading Stories, TestPrep Reading Skills Literature, and TestPrep Reading Skills Informational.

Writing: Today’s assignment was to continue drafting their novel today. Students should have 70% of their word goal completed by the end of the weekend.

The novel project is due Wednesday, March 25. Homework is to work on writing for at least 15 minutes daily during the week.

Science: We reviewed amplitude using a discussion forum in Jupiter. Students that haven’t commented can find it in Jupiter Messages.

Social Studies: We reviewed economic ideas about supply, demand, price, and substitute goods using a Jupiter discussion forum.

Character Strength: We are learning about social intelligence this week.

Class activities for Thursday, March 12

Spelling: We learned about using hyphens when spelling numbers less than 100, and for fractions.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles. Students also practice reading skills using MobyMax Foundational Reading.

Writing: Students continued to draft their novel today. Students should have 60% of their word goal completed by tonight. The class average is 51%, which means that several students are behind schedule.

The novel project is due Wednesday, March 25. Homework is to work on writing for at least 15 minutes daily during the week.

Math: We practiced dividing using the partial quotients method again today. We haven’t made much class progress on division lately due to some students not working at home. Please make sure your student is practicing math on weekdays, so they aren’t getting behind or feeling confused in class. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: Today was a health and nutrition lesson.

Social Studies: We annotated an article about how video game manufacturers compete for business.

Character Strength: We are learning about social intelligence this week.

Class activities for Wednesday, March 11

Spelling: We finished reviewing rules for adding suffixes onto base words.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: None today due to the late start.

Writing: Students also continued to draft their novel today. Students should have 50% of their word goal completed by tonight. The class average is 41%. Several students are behind, but many have made good progress by working at home.

The novel project is due Wednesday, March 25. Homework is to work on writing for at least 15 minutes daily during the week.
