Class activities for Tuesday, November 10

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 22-24 are available and due on Friday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We talked today about the three main ingredients of any story:

  • Characters
  • Plot
  • Setting

Students also continued prewriting today, focusing on the characters and settings of their story. A fiction story will be due Monday, November 30.

Math: We practiced solving geometric patterns today (patterns that change in predictable ways). Students also practiced math skills using Khan Academy.

Homework is to practice MobyMax Math or Khan Academy for at least 15 minutes.

Science: We reviewed our last experiment about electrical circuits and students created a new minibook to write notes about electricity.

Social Studies: We reviewed yesterday’s assignment about how supply affects price.

Class activities for Monday, November 9

Spelling: Students continued making Words to Learn lists by correcting words they missed on the last spelling test.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 22-24 are available and due on Friday.

Reading: Due to the large drop in our last class average STAR Reading level, the class wanted a chance to retake the test, and we did that today.

Writing: Today was the first day of prewriting for our next piece of writing, a fiction story. Today, we reviewed different styles and elements of fiction writing. Students also started making a list of their favorite stories and movies; this should probably be the type of story your student tries to write. This fiction story will be due Monday, November 30.

Math: We practiced looking for a rule to explain the pattern in a series of numbers. Today was also the final day to work on these skills:

Homework is to practice MobyMax Math or Khan Academy for at least 15 minutes.

Science: Students finished an experiment about making an electrical circuit with one battery, one wire, and one bulb. Homework is to finish this experiment if not done in class.

Social Studies: Students worked with their team to write ideas about how supply, demand, and price are connected.

Class activities for Friday, November 6

Spelling: Students started making Words to Learn lists by correcting words they missed on the last spelling test.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 19-21 are available and due on Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading skills and AR practice day. Students also received their latest STAR Reading level today. Here is the class average:

As you can see, our class average reading level dropped from 4.4 to 3.9. To try to reverse this trend, we are now working on reading skills practice three days a week, in addition to Literature Circles four days a week. Some students admitted they are not reading at home 20 minutes a night. Everyone said they are going to look for ways to improve. I told the class we can take the STAR test again on Monday to see if being more thoughtful and careful will give them a better result.

Writing: Today was a publishing day. This personal narrative is due Monday, November 9. Your student should be making final revisions and edits, and publishing so that the writing looks nice and is readable.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on questioning and making connections as a reading strategy.

Writing: Today was an editing day; and students worked on editing conferences with a partner. This personal narrative is due Monday, November 9. Your student should be editing at this point.

Math: Today students completed a STAR Math test.

Spelling: Today we practiced sorting words by short and long vowel sounds. This will be the skill tested on tomorrow’s spelling test.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 19-21 are available and due on Friday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Today was an editing day. Students worked on editing their own writing for spelling, capital letters, and sentence sense. This personal narrative is due Friday, November 6. Your student should be editing at this point.

Math: Today we practiced looking for an extending patterns in tables.
