Writing: Today, we read a poem about a black cat creeping down a city street. The poem had a lot of imagery and music. Some students thought of animals they could write peoms about. Students also continued to work on their collection of poems, due Friday, May 22.

Math: We worked on fraction skills today in MobyMax Math.

Science: We learned that ocean tides are caused by the gravity of the moon and sun. We also learned that extreme tides are caused when the sun and moon are on the same side of earth (new moon) or on opposite sides of the earth (full moon) when the gravity can add to each other or pull against each other like a tug-of-war.

Reading: Today was a reading skills and AR practice day. Students also received a copy of their latest STAR Reading level results. Our class results are shown below. We wanted to reach 6.0 grade level as a stretch goal, and we did!

Writing: Today, we talked about using metaphors in poems: my house is a jungle, school is a pinball game.

Writing: Today, we talked about how students can write poems about small, insignificant moments. Not all poems have to be about big, weighty ideas. For example, a student can write a poem about a kitten stalking, hunting, and pouncing on a piece of fuzz.

Social Studies: We learned about how the Declaration of Independence was written and voted on. Homework is to read pp. 168-171 and to finish the reading notes about Thomas Jefferson on slavery. We’ll also have a MiniQuiz about the Declaration of Independence tomorrow.
