Class activities for Thursday, October 10

Spelling: Students worked on their Words to Learn lists by correcting words missed on their last spelling test. These words are your student’s spelling list to practice for the next test.

Cursive: Cursive workbook pp. 24-27 are due on Friday.

Reading: Students completed part 1 of the Writing MEAP test today.

Writing: Students completed editing conferences today using a Checklist for Good Writers. During the conference students added comments to the story of another writing, pointing out mistakes with spelling, capital letters and sentence sense. Your student may need to finish the conference at home with a family member or friend.

The second piece of writing for the year is a personal narrative, due Monday, October 14 (new date). Your student should be editing at this time and reading to complete their writing.

Math: Students used MobyMax Math to work on math skills. Would you like to see how your student is progressing? Just go to shortlinks.mrhowd.com/mobymax and select “parent” from the menu. Writing: Students received feedback on their last piece of writing and wrote notes about it on a writing log. They also continued to work on their next piece of writing.

The second piece of writing for the year is a personal narrative, due Friday, October 11. Your student should be finished with their draft and revising at this time.

Math: We practiced using pictures to solve number stories and write equations. Homework is to finish Journal P1-10.

Science: None today due to working on the Reading MEAP test.

Class activities for Monday, October 7

Spelling: We started to make Words to Learn lists. This will be a list of words missed on the last spelling test that can be studied for future tests.

Cursive: Cursive workbook pp. 24-27 are due on Friday.

Reading: Today we started to place everyone into a Literature Circles group. This will be a group of students that will read and discuss the same book, usually for about a month. Groups will change after a month, new Literature Circles groups will form, and and new books will read.

Writing: None today due to an assembly about bullying.

The second piece of writing for the year is another personal narrative. This personal narrative is due Friday, October 11. Your student should be nearing the end of their draft and getting ready to revise at this time.

Math: We practiced using multiplication facts to help solve division facts. Homework is to finish Journal P1-9. Some students are still struggling with mastering multiplication and division facts. Using Math Facts in a Flash or MobyMax Fact Master for just 5-10 minutes each night will make a big difference!

Science: We wrote notes in our minibooks about magnetic metals and materials, temporary and permanent magnets, and how the force of a magnet can go through thin, non-magnetic materials.

Social Studies: We started to learn about how scarcity causes people to make choices about what to make, how make products, and what to buy.

Reading: Today was our reading skills practice time using MobyMax Reading.

Writing: We talked about using details to prove general statements. Without details, a reader will think the story is floaty, spacey or general-feeling.

Students also continued to draft their current story. The second piece of writing for the year is another personal narrative. This personal narrative is due Friday, October 11. Your student should be nearing the end of their draft and getting reading to revise at this time.

Math: Today was our math skills practice time.

Science: None today.

Social Studies: We continued to learn about economic activities of Michigan.
