Class activities for Friday, October 18

Spelling: We learned common spelling patterns for the long i sound: igh, ind, i, i-consonant-e, y.

Cursive: Cursive workbook pp. 28-30 were due today.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles. Students shared their questions, connections, illustrations, and passages with the other readers in their group and discussed their reading.

Writing: We talked about how much time it takes to write a quality piece of writing. If a student works for just 15 minutes a day at school, that would amount to 3 hours of writing time over 3 weeks. If that students works just 15 minutes at home a day, that would be another 3 hours, for a total of 6 hours. Working for only 15 minutes at school and home each day isn’t much, so working for longer might be needed to write an interesting piece of writing that others want to read. For students that don’t work each day, and wait until the deadline, they would have to work for 6 hours just to achieve an average piece of writing. The point: don’t wait until the end! Work a little each day at school and home!

The third and last piece of the marking period is a slightly fictionalized personal narrative, due Friday, November 1. Your student should be nearing the half-way point of their draft by now.

Math: We used Khan Academy and MobyMax to work on math skills.

Science: None today.

Social Studies: We started learning about the features of a market economy, the system used in the US. Homework is to finish the Market Economy: Important Ideas notes page started yesterday with a guest teacher.

Writing: We talked about how an author can make up realistic details to make a story more interesting for the reader. As long as being truthful isn’t the goal, a story that has been “fictionalized” a little can be more interesting. Here is a story that is a personal narrative that has been fictionalized slightly:
