Writing: We began a unit on poetry by learning that poems have at least one of these “ingredients:”

• Imagery: sights, sounds, smells, etc.
• Music: a rhythm or beat, even if the poem does not rhyme.
• Emotion: happiness, sadness, fear, etc.

Students also began writing poems in class. Our next portfolio piece will be a collection of poems, due Friday, May 22.Math: We stared a unit on division today by dividing using multiples of ten. Homework is to finish Journal p. 148.

Science: We did an activity today to learn that the sun, if the size of a beach ball, would be a soccer field away from the earth, if the size of a pinky fingernail. Or, in other words, the sun is far away!

Science: In health today, we reviewed how to stay safe at home from these hazards:

• cuts/scrapes
• bruises/broken bones
• electrical shocks
• poisons
• breathing problems (choking, suffocating)

We also talked about how to stay safe when home alone, and when to call 911 for help.

Writing: Today was the final class day to work on digital presentations using MrHowd.com Docs (docs.mrhowd.com).

The final digital presentation is due Thursday, April 30 by 7:00 pm. Any changes after that time may not go into effect. Our I-Search Conference is Friday, May 1; family members are invited to hear student presentations in the small gym, from 10:30 am until 11:50 am.

I also asked students to wear business casual-type clothing, no jeans, shorts or t-shirts please. Students are welcome to bring a change of clothes for after our presentations.

Math: Students completed a three-problem MiniQuiz about multiplication and practiced rounding large numbers. Homework is finish Journal pp. 140 and 142. We will have a test over multiplication on Friday.

Science: We graded yesterday’s homework and reviewed the mass and gravity of the moon. We also watched a video clip of an experiment done on the moon of dropping a hammer and feather at the same time. One the moon, both of those objects landed at the same time.
