Weekly Wrap for November 9

  • Spelling: /k/ spelling patterns, Words to Learn list
  • Cursive: pp. 35-37
  • Reading: New Literature Circles, visualizing, determining importance
  • Writing: Choice adjectives, fix spelling errors, using a thesaurus
  • Math: Data landmarks, partial sums addition
  • Science: Electrical circuits, open and closed circuits, switches
  • Social Studies: Regions review and test

Class activities for Friday, November 9

Friday, November 9th, 2007

Spelling: Students completed the Unit 2 Skill test today over /k/ spelling patterns.

Cursive: Cursive pages 35-37 were due today.

Reading: Today was a Literature Circles reading day. Some students worked on determining importance.

Writing: Today was a work day and the first drafting day. Ask your student what topic they are working on! The next piece of writing is due November 28.

Math: Today was Math Skills Online. Thursday’s homework is to finish Journal pp. 42-45 by Monday.

Science: We discussed the On and Off experiment and discovered that…

  • …circuits are a path for electricity,
  • …open circuits keep electricity from flowing, and
  • …closed circuits allow electricity to flow.

Social Studies: None on Fridays.

Spelling: We practiced identifying spelling patterns for the /k/ sound.

Cursive: Cursive pages 35-37 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was a Literature Circles discussion day.

Writing: We talked about strategies for fixing spelling errors, such as asking someone, looking the word up, finding it in a book, or spelling it different ways. Today was a prewriting day. The next piece of writing is due November 28.

Math: We made a class bar graph today. Homework is to finish Journal pp. 42-45 by Monday.

Science: None today due to library.

Social Studies: We received new Michigan textbooks and made new government minibooks.

Class activities for Wednesday, November 7

Spelling: Students finished up their fall greeting wreaths.

Cursive: Cursive pages 35-37 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was a Literature Circles reading day.

Writing: We learned that using choice adjectives helps make the writing more interesting and specific (blazing heat, not just heat).  Today was a prewriting day. The next piece of writing is due November 28.

Math: We practiced the partial sums method of addition today. Homework is to complete 15 addition problems on a worksheet using the partial sums method.

Science: We finished our experiment to design a circuit with a switch. Homework is to finish the analyze and conclude questions.

Social Studies: Today was the regions test. Next up, government!

Spelling: Students worked on their Words to Learn list. This is their spelling list to practice for the next test. Homework is to finish the Words to Learn list if not done in class.

Cursive: Cursive pages 35-37 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was a Literature Circles discussion day.

Writing: We made fall wreaths with harvest greetings. We used the thesaurus to look up more interesting words than “Happy Fall,” or “It’s Autumn.” The next piece of writing is due November 28.

Math: Today we learned a new way to add called partial sums. Homework is to complete Journal p. 39. The Student Reference Book has more information on the partial sums method of addition.

Science: We continued our experiment to design a circuit with a switch.

Social Studies: We played a game to review for tomorrow’s test over US Regions.
