Class activities for Thursday, February 14

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 62-64 are available and will be due next week.

Reading: None today due to our Valentine’s party.

Writing: None today due to our Valentine’s party.

Math: We practiced converting between meters, centimeters and millimeters.

Science: We reviewed the How is Colored Light Made? experiment and found out that color filters create colored light by blocking some of the colors in white light.

Social Studies: We played a game to review the first peoples of Michigan.

Our party was so good, it was scary, literally! We passed out our cards, ate sloppy joes, chips, and fruit, then played games. As you can tell from the picture, everyone had wonderful, lovely-tasting fun!Feb Factor 2008

Class activities for Wednesday, February 13

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008

Spelling: Today we reviewed the idea that suffixes added onto the end of a word create a new word (holder, holds, holding), but also that some verbs are irregular (held, not holded).

Cursive: Cursive pages 61-63 are available and due Thursday.

Reading: Today was a Literature Circles reading day.

Writing: Most students started prewriting conferences. The next piece of writing is due February 29. This piece should be some type of fiction not including any student from our class as a character.

Math: Students measured objects to the nearest millimeter. Homework is to finish Journal pp. 105-106.

Science: Students completed an experiment using color filters. Homework is to finish the analyze and conclude questions of the How is Colored Light Made? experiment.

Today was also Science Fair Kick Off. The Science Fair will be on March 18.

Social Studies: We finished learning about the Three Fires people of Michigan and drew pictures to help us remember key ideas.

Class activities for Tuesday, February 12

Spelling: Today we practiced compound words, two words combined to make a new word (anything, bedspread).

Cursive: Cursive pages 61-63 are available and due Thursday.

Reading: None today due to a character education and Black History assembly.

Writing: Students submitted a fiction piece into their portfolios and started prewriting for their next piece. The next piece of writing is due February 29. This piece should be some type of fiction not including any student from our class as a character.

Math: Students estimated the metric length and height of objects around the room.

Science: Students continued working on their Circles of Light mosaics started yesterday to remember the idea that white light is made of colored light. Homework is to finish the mosaic if not done in class.

Social Studies: We drew pictures to help us remember key ideas about the Three Fires Indians of Michigan.

Spelling: Today was a preview of upcoming spelling words.

Cursive: Cursive pages 61-63 are available and due Thursday.

Reading: Today Literature Circles groups planned their daily reading page assignments.

Writing: None today due to technology.

The next piece of writing is due tomorrow, Tuesday, February 12. This piece should be some type of fiction not including any student from our class as a character.

Math: We created personal references for metric measurement (a centimeter is about the width of a pinky finger). Homework is to complete Journal pp. 101-102, estimating and measureing at least seven objects from home. Students will have time tomorrow to use meter sticks to estimate larger objects in class.

Science: Students started a project today remember the idea that white light is made of colored light.

Social Studies: We drew pictures to help us remember key ideas about Michigan’s first three Indian groups: the Paleo-Indians, the Old Copper People, the Hopewell Mound Builders.

Spelling: Most students completed their Words to Learn list today. This is their customized list of spelling words to practice for the next test. Some students have not finished preparing their list and may need to come in during recess. Homework is to practice this list!

Cursive: Five cursive sentences of seven or more words are due on Friday.

Reading: Students received their new Literature Circles book groups today. They also received a letter indicating their most recent STAR reading level. You can also check SnapGrades for their reading level.

Writing: None today due to an extended time with math and art.

Students should be editing at this point. The next piece of writing is due this Friday, February 8. This piece should be some type of fiction not including any student from our class as a character.

Math: We started some practice with metric measurement. Homework is to complete Journal pp. 98-99.

Science: We view some websites related to our recent light experiments.

Social Studies: We looked at some Indian artifacts and talked about how scientists use artifacts to learn about history.
