Class activities for Friday, September 19 and Monday, September 22

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

***A guest teacher was with us Friday, so those activities are included in today’s post.***

Spelling: Friday students reviewed short and long vowel sounds. No spelling today due to discussing Friday’s activities when the guest teacher was with us. A spelling and skill test will be tomorrow.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 18-20 were due today.

Reading: Friday students practiced making connections (When the book says ______, it reminds me of ________.) Today, we practicing visualizing by drawing illustrations that match a part of the text.

Writing: Students continued to work on their personal narrative piece of writing due Friday. Today, students had revising conferences.

The first piece of writing, a personal narrative, will be due Friday, September 26. Your student should be revising by now.

Math: Friday, students made different sided polygons (pentagons, hexagons, etc.) with rubberbands on geoboards. Students started working on the Geometric Designs activity about coloring different polygons. Today, we reviewed the names for different sided polygons. Students started to work on the Hidden Polygons activity (click here to download), to find various polygons in triangular graph paper. Hint: some polygons are formed along the edges!

Homework is to finish both pages by Wednesday.

Science: We collected the Dropping In response sheet for a grade, made sound minibooks, and took notes in our new minibooks.

Social Studies: We discussed the Southeast Rivers/Water WordSplash activity and collected it for a grade.

Class activities for Thursday, September 18

Spelling: We played a game to review short and long vowel sounds. This will be the skill tested on Monday’s spelling test.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 18-20 are available and due Monday.

Reading: None today due to an extra time with writing.

Writing: Students completed a prewriting conference by having a partner ask them questions about their writing topic.

The first piece of writing, a personal narrative, will be due Friday, September 26. Your student should be drafting by now.

Math: We learned that polygons have three rules:

  1. No intersections or crossing
  2. No openings or gaps
  3. No curves

Homework is to finish Journal pp. 10-11 by Monday if not completed in class.

Science: Students sent messages to each other using a sound code. Homework is to finish the Dropping In response sheet by Monday.

Social Studies: We learned that the Southeast is famous for the Mississippi River, and many other smaller rivers and wetlands. Homework is to finish the Southeast Rivers/Water WordSplash activity if not completed in class.

Spelling: We learned common spelling patterns for the short o sound (al, au, aw, o). We’ll have a spelling test on Monday; the spelling worksheets will be due at that time.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 18-20 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today we practiced having a discussion day in Literature Circles; everyone practiced reading and answering questions from yesterday.

Writing: None today; we’ll have extra time for Writer’s Workshop tomorrow.

Math: We reviewed quadrangles and parallelograms today. Homework is to complete Journal pp. 8-9.

Science: None today due to Constitution Day activities. We watched some SchoolHouse Rock video clips about why are country doesn’t have kings, how we started the Revolution, and the Preamble to the Constitution.

We remembered how important the Constitution is by learning and singing the Preamble to the Constitution:

We the people
In order to form a more perfect union,
Establish justice, insure domestic tranquility,
Provide for the common defense,
Promote the general welfare and
Secure the blessings of liberty
To ourselves and our posterity
Do ordain and establish this Constitution
For the United States of America.

Reading: We started Literature Circles today by reading Esperanza Rising and working on writing interesting, open-ended questions (How would you feel if…? Have you ever…? Why do you think…? What would you do if…?).

Writing: Students started making a web of ideas about their first piece of writing, a personal narrative or memory that they have experienced.

The first piece of writing, a personal narrative, will be due Friday, September 26. Your student should be prewriting and planning by now.
Math: We reviewed angles and triangles today. Homework is to complete Journal p. 6.

Science: We started a unit on sound by playing a game called Drop Challenge. Groups secretly dropped various objects into a drop chamber, and the other team has to guess what item was dropped.

Social Studies: We started learning about the Southeast today. Homework is to finish the Preview Sentences of the Southeast Rivers/Water WordSplash worksheet, if not done in class.
