Class activities for Tuesday, September 30

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Spelling: Today was a preview of upcoming spelling words.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 21-23 are due Friday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day. Some students worked on visualizing as a reading strategy.

Writing: Today students added some possible future writing ideas to their Brainstorms list, and they’ll choose a writing topic tomorrow.

The next piece of writing, a personal narrative, will be due October 10.

Math: We reviewed three-dimensional figures and started a math experiment to count the faces, edges and vertices of space figures.

Science: None due to an extended Social Studies time and Picture Day.

Social Studies: We reviewed the long growing season and location of coal in the Southeast, took notes in our minibooks, and started learning about how the Southeast was known for slavery in the past.

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Spelling: None today due to library.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 21-23 are due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day. Some students worked on making connections as a reading strategy.

Writing: Today we learned how to make a map of a well-known and favorite place and to think of interesting memories from that place. Students made their own map to “dig up buried stories.”

The next piece of writing, a personal narrative, will be due October 10.

Math: We reviewed two-dimensional and three-dimensional figures. Homework is to finish the Searching for Space Figures worksheet started in class.

Science: Students completed four mini-experiments to learn how length is related to pitch. Homework is to finish writing their observations if not done in class.

Social Studies: None due to library.

Class activities for Friday, September 26

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Spelling: Today students made their Words to Learn list by correcting words they missed on the recent spelling test. This is your students custom list of words to study for the next spelling test.

Cursive: None this week.

Reading: Today was a discussion day. Students shared their questions, connections, illustrations, favorite passages with their groups.

Writing: A piece of writing was due into portfolios today; however, students who didn’t turn in their writing today will be allowed to submit the piece of writing into their portfolios on Monday. The students that still haven’t turned in their portfolio folders, or ones that fail to submit a piece of writing on Monday will be given as many recesses as they need to fix these problems.

We will continue to work on personal narratives for the next piece of writing, due October 10.

Math: None today.

Science: None today.

Social Studies: We finished learning about coal in the Southeast. Homework is to finish the Fact or Fiction worksheet by Monday.

Class activities for Thursday, September 25

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Spelling: Today we reviewed the Unit 1 spelling worksheets and they were collected for a grade.

Cursive: None this week.

Reading: Today was our first reading day of Literature Circles. Students read their books and wrote questions and connections, drew illustrations, and picked favorite passages.

Writing: Students continued to work on their personal narrative piece of writing due Friday. Students should be writing their final copy by now.

The first piece of writing, a personal narrative, will be due Friday, September 26.

Math: We reviewed polygon names and definitions today, and students also completed a MiniQuiz over angles and polygons.

Science: None today due to extra spelling time. One of the tasks of the spelling packet was to think about what everyone wanted to become when they grew up. Everyone shared, and we realized that all the future scientists, veterinarians, doctors, teachers, military officers, architects, police officers and pilots in our class would need to work hard in school and go to college some day.

Social Studies: Students completed a continents MiniQuiz today.

Class activities for Tuesday, September 23 and Wednesday, September 24

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

***A guest teacher was with us Tuesday afternoon, so those activities are included in today’s post.***

Spelling: Tuesday was the Unit 1 spelling test. No spelling today due to library.

Cursive: Students completed a cursive quiz today.

Reading: Tuesday, students practicing picking passages and telling their group why they picked those passages. Today, students were placed into Literature Circles groups, based on reading level. Literature Circles will start tomorrow. Also, a paper was sent home today explaining your student’s STAR reading level. You can also see this score on SnapGrades.

Writing: Yesterday and today, students continued to work on their personal narrative piece of writing due Friday. Students should be editing (checking spelling, capitals, etc.) or writing their final copy by now.The first piece of writing, a personal narrative, will be due Friday, September 26.

Math: Yesterday, students reviewed polygon names and attributes. Homework was to finish a puzzle page started in class. Today, we reviewed the polygon homework. There will be a MiniQuiz over angles and polygons tomorrow. Note that only 10 students completed the math homework. Ask your student if they were one of the responsible 10.

Homework is to complete StudyLink 1.6 about defining polygons.

Science: Yesterday, students completed two science experiments to see that vibrations cause sounds. Today we reviewed those experiments and collected them for a grade.

Social Studies: None today due to library.
