Class activities for Monday, October 31

Monday, October 31st, 2011

Spelling: We learned the correct usage of among and between: use among with three or more objects, and use between when there are only two.

  • The cookie was shared between John and Maria.
  • The cookie was shared among John, Maria, and Jason.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 30-32 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on visualizing as a reading strategy.

Writing: We talked about fixing spelling errors by looking around the room for the word, asking someone else, writing the word different ways, and looking in a dictionary.

A slightly fictionalized personal narrative is due Friday, November 4. Students should be revising at this time.

Math: We learned about finding patterns in data tables. Homework is to finish Journal P2-3.

Science: Today was a Physical Education and Nutrition lesson about healthy meals. Students also tried some pumpkin dip and apples.

Social Studies: Students worked on a cause and effect organizer about the price of strawberries after a hard freeze. Homework is to finish the organizer if not done in class.

Class activities for Friday, October 28

Friday, October 28th, 2011

Today was our Hawaiian Beach Bash! Students surfed, put on Hawaiian shirts, threw frisbees, tossed foam noodles, ate pineapple slices, chewed on lemons and limes, had a hula-hoop contest, and danced to the Beach Boys! Later, it was Hawaiian pizza, Capri Suns and fruit kabobs! Thanks to all the families that helped with food, donations, decorations, games, setup and cleanup! Our party was totally tubular because of everyone’s help! Look for pictures and videos soon.

Spelling: We learned common spelling patterns for the /k/ sound: c, ck, ch, k, qu.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 27-29 are available and due Monday.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students completed revising conferences today.

A slightly fictionalized personal narrative is due Friday, November 4. Students should be revising at this time.

Math: None today due to our Hawaiian Beach Bash.

Science: Students made oobleck (corn starch mixed with a little water). We noticed that oobleck sometimes acts like a solid, and sometimes acts like a liquid! Creepy!

Social Studies: None today due to our Hawaiian Beach Bash.

Spelling: We started learning about spelling patterns for the /k/ sound.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 27-29 are available and due Monday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We learned that choice adjectives help the reader to answer the question, “What kind?” For example, if a story talks about a car, and adjective can describe what kind of car (red car or fast car).

A personal narrative, slightly fictionalized, is due into portfolios on Friday, November 4. Students should be revising at this time.

Math: We practiced number sequences today by extended patterns and looking for the rule of the pattern. Homework is to finish Journal P2-2.

Science: Students completed an experiment about trying to find the location of magnets hidden in a box, using a compass, iron filings or magnetic objects. Homework is to finish the Detecting Magnets experiment if not done in class.

Social Studies: We learned about competition and how supply and demand affect prices.

Spelling: We learned that spelling larger words is easier if the word is broken into syllables.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 27-29 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on questioning as a reading strategy.

Writing: Today was a work day in writing.

A personal narrative, slightly fictionalized, is due into portfolios on Friday, November 4. Students should be revising at this time.

Math: We practiced looking for repeating patterns using shapes and numbers. Homework is to finish Journal P2-1.

Science: We reviewed our last experiment and learned that the force of a magnet decreases quickly with distance.

Social Studies: None today due to our Math and Reading Skills time.

Spelling: We reviewed common long i spelling patterns by learning some famous idioms:

  • behind the times
  • right off the bat
  • try out
  • sit tight

Cursive: Cursive pp. 27-29 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Students received new Literature Circles groups today.

Writing: None today due to our technology time.

A personal narrative, slightly fictionalized, is due into portfolios on Friday, November 4. Students should be almost finished with drafting at this time.

Math: Students worked on a math test today about multiplication and division.

Science: Students completed an experiment about testing the strength of a magnet’s force over a distance. Homework is to finish the Breaking the Force experiment if not done in class.

Social Studies: We learned about how price, demand, supply, competition and substitute goods affect the choices consumers make when they purchase goods.
