Hawaiian Beach Bash 2013

Thursday, October 31st, 2013

Today was our Hawaiian Beach Bash! Students surfed, tossed foam noodles, ate pineapple slices, danced to the Beach Boys, and tried to win the hula hoop contest! Later, it was Hawaiian pizza, Capri Suns and fruit kabobs! Thanks to all the families that helped with food, donations, decorations, games, setup and cleanup! Our party was totally tubular because of everyone’s help! Here’s a sneak peak at some pictures and videos from the party today!

Class activities: When we weren’t slicin’ sand, we did a little work. We practiced for an upcoming science MiniQuiz about magnetism. We also had editing conferences in which partners posted editing comments for our current personal narratives, which are due tomorrow.

Class activities for Wednesday, October 30

Wednesday, October 30th, 2013

Spelling: We talked about how it is easier to spell larger words by breaking the words into syllables.

Cursive: Cursive workbook pp. 34-36 are due Friday.

Reading: Students worked on MobyMax Reading today. We also started working on Literature Circles projects for students to share their books with the class.

Writing: We talked about using verbs that describe action in writing. Instead of saying run, write streak, pelt, zip. Those types of action verbs help the reader to picture what is happening.

Students also completed revising conferences today by posting comments to a partner’s writing piece in Google Docs.

The third and last piece of the marking period is a slightly fictionalized personal narrative, due Friday, November 1. Your student should be making final revisions at this time.

Math: We practiced extending tables to identify number patterns. Students also worked on completed math skills in MobyMax.

Science: Students completed an experiment that involved making a compass from a magnetized iron needle floating on water. Students noticed that the needle always pointed in a north-south direction, even if the bowl of water was moved, unless another magnet was near the compass. Homework is to finish the Detecting Directions experiment.

Social Studies: None today due to our reading skills practice time.

The third and last piece of the marking period is a slightly fictionalized personal narrative, due Friday, November 1. Your student should be finished revising at this time.

Math: We practiced identifying and extending number patterns. For example, the numbers 17, 19, 21, 23 have the pattern of increasing by 2, so extending the pattern would include the numbers, 25 and 27. Students also worked on completed math skills in Khan Academy related to addition and subtraction. Homework is to work on MobyMax, Khan Academy, or

Science: We learned that a magnet’s force takes the shape of lines as the force moves outward from the magnet. We used iron filings to see that the magnetic lines of force move toward magnets if they are attracting, but the lines move away from magnets that are repelling. We also reviewed the idea that the poles are the ends of a magnet with the strongest area of force, and that while like pole repel, opposite poles attract.

Social Studies: We listed the characteristics of a market economy. Homework is to complete the Prediction Chart started in class about what is produced in a market economy.
