Class activities for Thursday, October 13

Thursday, October 13th, 2016

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: None today due to extra time with science. We’ll have an extra reading time tomorrow.

Writing: Students worked on editing conferences and publishing today. A personal narrative will be due Monday, October 17; your student should be editing or publishing at this point

Math: We practiced drawing pictures to help understand number stories. Students also worked in MobyMax Math on decimal and place value skills. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Science: The World Health Organization is proposing a tax on sugary pops and drinks. So, we talked about how liquid sugar is digested by our body and how it causes so many negative effects. We read this article about why liquid sugar is the worst. It summarizes several studies showing that even one pop a day can have negative health effects related to diabetes and heart disease. In America, we are trained that pop and food go together. And some fruit juices have even more sugar and calories than pop. But water, tea, or milk are much better drink options. Students spent some time thinking about goals they would like to make in the area of how much liquid sugar they will be putting into their bodies. Ask your student what goal they set, and while you are at it, consider how much liquid sugar you are drinking, too. According to science, one pop a day is too much if you want to improve your health.

Social Studies: Students received social studies books today. We started to learn about European explorers and why they came to the New World.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Students also worked on editing today. A personal narrative will be due Monday, October 17; your student should be editing revising at this point for spelling, capitals, punctuation, sentence sense, paragraphs.

Math: We practiced using decimal grids to model addition. Students also worked in Khan Academy or MobyMax to work on rounding or other decimal skills. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Science: We talked about our class science grades so far. More than half the class has a D or E in science for these reasons:

  1. Not doing science analysis question homework, or
  2. Writing short, skimpy answers, or
  3. Not reading the questions carefully and not answering what is being asked.

Students can fix these problems in these ways:

  1. Start doing all science homework. We only have science homework one or two times a week, if that.
  2. Write longer answers.
  3. Reading carefully and answer what is being asked.
  4. Correct any low scores by making corrections on a piece of paper and turning it in. Students will earn a half-point for each point corrected.

Social Studies: Students worked on the chapter 1 test again today. A few students will need to finish their test at home or at recess. Students working at home can use their etext or even a Google search for answers, but not another human being.
