Class activities for Monday, October 24

Monday, October 24th, 2016

Spelling: We practiced writing words with consonant blends, such as state and stood. The st in each is a blend.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on making connections as a reading strategy.

Writing: We talked about organizing writing so that a story connects from beginning, to middle, to end, focusing just the best parts.

Students also worked on drafting their personal narrative. Our last personal narrative will be due Monday, November 7; your student should be nearing the end of their draft at this point (nearing at least a full page). Homework is to work on writing for at least 15 minutes.

Math: We practiced exponents today using a Khan Academy topic of articles and practices. Students also worked on math skills at Khan Academy or MobyMax. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Here are some Khan Academy topics your students should be finished with this week:

Science: Students started working on an open-notebook quiz today and will finish it tomorrow.

Social Studies: We read about Hernan Cortes and his conquest of the Aztecs to get riches.

Class activities for Friday, October 21

Friday, October 21st, 2016

Spelling: We used letter cards to create words, including words with suffixes.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading skills practice day.

Writing: We talked about adding visual details to make places in stories seem real.

Students also worked on drafting their personal narrative. Our last personal narrative will be due Monday, November 7; your student should be about half done with their draft at this point. Homework is to work on writing for at least 15 minutes.

Math: We practiced estimating products by rounding, then multiplying. Students also worked on math skills at Khan Academy or MobyMax. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Here are some Khan Academy topics your students should be finished with this week:

Science: We reviewed our last experiment about testing medicines scientifically.

Social Studies: We read about Spanish explorers, including Christopher Columbus.

Spelling: We practiced adding suffixes to make number words: tenth, hundredth, twentieth, thirtieth, etc.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Students received new Literature Circles books today and we planned how many pages each group would read in a day.

Writing: We practiced breaking text into paragraphs today.

Students also started their to draft their personal narrative. Our last personal narrative will be due Monday, November 7; your student should be done prewriting at this point and drafting. Homework is to work on writing for at least 15 minutes.

Math: We practiced multiplying multiples of ten today. Students practiced this or decimal skills using Khan Academy or MobyMax. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Spelling: None today. We used this time to practice checking grades online at JupiterGrades. Your student knows how to check their grades, so this is now something you could have your student do regularly at home as a way to grow in responsibility. You could also use this as an opportunity for your student to set goals about fixing missing assignments, correcting low stores, or about trying to reach the Honor Roll.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Students previewed new Literature Circles books today.

Writing: Students worked on prewriting conferences today and also continued to prewrite for their personal narrative. Our last personal narrative will be due Monday, November 7; your student should be done prewriting at this point and ready to start their draft tonight or tomorrow. Homework is to work on writing for at least 15 minutes and to finish prewriting.

Math: We reviewed properties of multiplication today. Students continued to practice adding or subtracting decimals today using Khan Academy or MobyMax. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy and to finish decimal addition and subtraction skills. Here are some Khan Academy topics your students should be finished with this week:

Science: None today due to extra time with social studies.

Social Studies: We learned about how Portuguese sailors were the first from Europe to sail around Africa and reach India. They wanted to reach Asia to trade for spices and other riches. Homework is to finish the Lesson 1 key ideas, Got It? and online quiz found here.

Class activities for Tuesday, October 18

Spelling: We practiced forming irregular verbs, which are verbs that the suffix -ed cannot be added to. We also reviewed homophones today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Three final student groups performed their plays, focusing on reading fluently with speed, tone, accuracy and volume.

Writing: We finished watching a reading of a personal narrative to see how some writers have written personal narratives just like other famous stories. Today, we counted how many times the writer used talking, action, and visual details to create scenes.

Students also continued to prewrite for their personal narrative. A third and final personal narrative will be due Monday, November 7; your student should be prewriting and gathering ideas at this point.

Math: We continued to practice subtracting decimals today using Khan Academy. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy and to finish decimal addition and subtraction skills. Here are some Khan Academy topics your students should be finished with this week:

Science: We finished reading about how scientists use treatment groups and control groups in a trial, what the placebo effect is, and why having a placebo group is important. Homework is to finish analysis questions 1-6 on pp. 19-21 started in class.

Social Studies: None today.
