Reading: Today was a reading skills practice day.

Writing: We learned about animating bulleted lists on a slide so that the audience doesn’t read ahead.

Students also worked on editing and publishing today. Students will share their research as a digital presentation during our I-Search Conference on May 9 (new date). Homework is to finish slides for their presentation. Students were asked to include at least 7 slides in their presentation.

Math: None today due to the Talent Show. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Recent skills we’ve worked on:

Class activities for Wednesday, April 26

Wednesday, April 26th, 2017

Spelling: We reviewed the idea that some words have silent letters today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on determining importance as a reading strategy.

Writing: We talked about using interesting, authentic details in writing, rather than plan or boring facts or numbers. Students also learned how to add videos to their presentation.

Students continued to work on revising or editing today. Students will share their research as a digital presentation during our I-Search Conference on May 2. Homework is to continue revising slides for their presentation.

Math: We worked on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators again today. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Recent skills we’ve worked on:

Science: We started to read about the cause of seasons and how the sun’s rays affect seasons. Many poor behavior choices by a few disruptive students wasted a lot of our learning time, making the class have to finish for homework rather than working during class time. Homework is to finish reading pages 38-39 and to finish analysis questions 1-2 on p. 40.

Social Studies: We worked on a district social studies test about settlement again today.

Notes:

  • A Parent Math Lab class is scheduled for Thursday, April 27 from 6-7 pm. It’s free and will help provide tips for working with your student on math.

Class activities for Tuesday, April 25

Tuesday, April 25th, 2017

Spelling: Today was a preview of upcoming spelling words.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students worked on revising today.

Science: We learned about what causes seasons. Most students predicted that summer is warmer because earth is closer to the sun, and winter is warmer because earth is farther away. We tested this prediction with a computer simulation. According to the simulation, earth is farther from the sun during our summer, and closer to the sun during our winter. So it’s not distance that creates our seasons. Then we tested how the tilt of earth affects seasons. We learned that without a tilt, our temperature and daylight would be like spring all year long, but with a tilt, we have changing seasons. It’s the tilt of the earth that causes our seasons (we are tilted toward the sun in summer, and away from the sun in winter). Homework is to finish analysis questions 1-7 on p. 31.

Social Studies: We worked on a district social studies test about settlement.

Class activities for Monday, April 24

Monday, April 24th, 2017

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles. Some groups worked on making inferences as a reading strategy.

Writing: We talked using a comparison to help readers understand a point of information. For example, if a hippo weighs 6,000 pounds, that could be compared to about 20 football linebackers. Making that comparison helps a reader to understand the number given.

Students also worked on revising conferences and revising. Students will share their research as a digital presentation during our I-Search Conference on May 2. Homework is to continue revising on slides for their presentation.

Math: We worked on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Recent skills we’ve worked on:

Science: We started our final topic of the year: astronomy. We made a graph of how daylight hours and sun angle in the sky change during different seasons. We noticed that there is more daylight in the summer and the sun’s angle is higher in the sky, which there is less daylight and the sun’s angle is lower in the winter. Homework is to finish analysis questions 1-7 on p. 26.

Social Studies: We learned about the Battle of Saratoga, an important victory for the Continental Army. After that, France decided to help the colonists with supplies and money.
