Class activities for Thursday, November 30

Thursday, November 30th, 2017

Spelling: We learned that c makes a /k/ sound if it’s followed by a u, o, or a. But c makes an /s/ sound if it’s followed by an e, i, or y.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 33-35 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: We read an expository text about spiders. Students worked on reading skills using MobyMax.

Writing: We talked about writing an interesting ending that uses a visual detail; an action, or some talking. We also talked about organizing writing so that the important parts are longer, with more details.

Students also worked on drafting today. Our next piece of writing is a fiction story due Monday, December 18. Your student should be drafting at this point. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes.

Math: Students worked on multi-digit subtraction or other math skills today at Khan Academy. Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We finished watching a DVD about if the earth and life is rare in the universe, or if planets like earth are common.

Social Studies: None today.

Character Strength: We are learning about humility and modesty this week.

Spelling: We learned about common spelling patterns for the /k/ sound: c, ck, k, ch, qu.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 33-35 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: We learned about summarizing, finding the main idea and key details, and what an expository text is. Today was also a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We watched a video about baking cookies:

The video showed a person not taking time to gather the proper ingredients before baking. The result was a disaster. Students make the connection that prewriting is like gathering ingredients. When a writer has taken the time to gather their ideas, they can easily follow the recipe to make their story. That’s why prewriting is so important.

Students also worked on prewriting conferences and prewriting today. Our next piece of writing is a fiction story due Monday, December 18. Your student should be prewriting at this point. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes and to finish prewriting if not done yet.

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 33-35 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We talked about writing a summary using a sentence starter:  Somebody wanted ______________, but _____________ (problem), so ________________ (how they fixed it).

Students also worked on prewriting today. Our next piece of writing is a fiction story due Monday, December 18. Your student should be prewriting at this point. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes and to finish prewriting the people, places, and plot of the story.

Math: Students worked on multi-digit addition today at Khan Academy. Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: Students completed a MiniQuiz about the sun, moon, and earth.

Social Studies: We researched the history of poinsettias, how they got their name, if they are flowers, and if they are poisonous. Ask your student what they learned!

Monday, November 27th, 2017

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 33-35 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: We started reading expository text about animal adaptations.

Writing: We read a story called “Girl Wonder” and noticed that the story had a circular ending. It began and ended in a similar way.

Students also worked on prewriting today. Our next piece of writing is a fiction story due Monday, December 18. Your student should be prewriting at this point. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes and decide on the people, places, and plot of the story.

Math: We practiced estimating by rounding. Students also worked on the addition and subtraction topic at Khan Academy. Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: None today due to art.

Social Studies: Today was a leader lesson about taking initiative–fixing a problem before being asked.

Class activities for Wednesday, November 22

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2017

Today we worked on finishing our fiction stories, which are due Monday. Today would be a good day to have your student finish their writing if they aren’t done yet.

We also watched a Charlie Brown version of the history of the Pilgrims during their first year in the New World. We wrote down all of the things we are thankful for (our Thanksgiving blessings):
