Class activities for Thursday, February 8

Thursday, February 8th, 2018

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading skills practice day using MobyMax Reading Stories.

Writing: We talked about adding style to the introduction of a literary essay using one of these ideas:

  1. Use a quote from the book or from a famous person,
  2. Ask a question for the reader to think about,
  3. Use visual details for the reader to imagine a scene.

Students also worked on revising today. A literary essay will be due Monday, February 12. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes.

Here are some literary essay resources we’ve been using in class:

Math: None today due to extra time working on Market Day. Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We reviewed the Matter Investigation Review page.

Social Studies: We continued working on the Market Day economics project today. We made flyers and started building a website. You can see what we have at MarketDay.us.

Character Strength: We are learning about fairness this week.

Class activities for Wednesday, February 7

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Friday.

Reading: None today due to the late start day.

Writing: We reviewed the idea of making an essay out of three main parts:

  1. An introduction with the book’s summary and theme,
  2. Evidence from at least three parts of the book that shows how the book matches the theme,
  3. A conclusion with the theme and what the student learned from the book.

A literary essay will be due Monday, February 12. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should be finished with their draft tonight.

Here are some literary essay resources we’ve been using in class:

Social Studies: We started working on the Market Day economics project today. Fourth grade classes are hosting a market day for students to purchase student-made goods. Our class is in charge of building a website and designing advertising.

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Friday.

Reading: We read an article about genetically modified foods and how science can be helpful and sometimes harmful.

Writing: We worked on drafting the first half of our essay today.

A literary essay will be due Monday, February 12. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should be drafting by now.

Here are some literary essay resources we’ve been using in class:

Math: We practiced multiplication skills using the arithmetic topic at Khan Academy. Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We wrote notes in our minibooks about measuring liquid volume using graduated cylinders. Homework is to the Matter Investigation Review started in class.

Social Studies: Today was a leader lesson about setting goals. We looked at our recent report card to look for opportunities to set goals.

Character Strength: We are learning about fairness this week.

Spelling: We worked on making Words to Learn lists of words missed on the last spelling test for a final day today.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 52-54 are available and are due Friday. This was the final week of cursive review pages. For the remainder of the year, the assignment will be to write 10 cursive sentences weekly.

Reading: We read a biography about Abraham Lincoln. Today was also a Literature Circles discussion day.

Writing: We talked about organizing the evidence of a literary essay by finding three characters from the text, or three times from the text that shows the theme of the story. Students also worked on their draft today.

A literary essay will be due Monday, February 12. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should be drafting by now.

Math: We practiced multiplication skills using the arithmetic topic at Khan Academy. Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We practiced measuring liquids using graduated cylinders today. Students poured measured amounts of colored water into cups; if they measured correctly, the would make a rainbow-colored spectrum of water! Homework is to finish the Color Spectrum experiment if needed.

Social Studies: We learned about how a country’s economic system is decided by how the country uses its resources, what products they make, how they make them, and how they decide who will use the products.

Character Strength: We are learning about prudence this week.

Spelling: We continued Words to Learn lists of words missed on the last spelling test.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 52-54 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: We finished reading a biography about how Elizabeth Cady Stanton fought for women’s rights. We also reviewed the strategies of rereading and thinking about the author’s point of view.

Writing: Students had the goal of finishing prewriting their literary essay today. Students also commented on a partner’s writing during prewriting conferences.

A literary essay will be due Monday, February 12. Homework is to finish prewriting for 15 minutes.

Here are some literary essay resources we’ve been using in class:

Math: We practiced multiplication skills using the arithmetic topic at Khan Academy. Many students are working on mastery challenges to prove they have learned arithmetic skills. About half the class is still practicing 2-digit multiplication. Ask your student to show you their arithmetic progress! Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We practiced measuring liquids using graduated cylinders today.

Social Studies: Today was a leader lesson about setting goals.

Character Strength: We are learning about prudence this week.
