Class activities for Friday, December 13

Friday, December 13th, 2019

Spelling: Students practiced writing possessive pronouns: yours, ours, his, hers, mine, theirs. We talked about how possessive pronouns don’t use apostrophes.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 39-41 are available and were due today.

Reading: We started a topic about fantasy stories.

Writing: We worked on publishing today.

A fiction story is due Sunday, December 15. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should be publishing their story so it is finished and ready to read.

Math: Students completed a STAR Math test today. Here is our progress so far:

Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We used a simulation to notice that a predator might use marking on its prey to know if a prey was safe to eat. It would need to have enough light to see the markings. We also reviewed how the structures of the eye let light through the pupil, to light receptors, which send a message through the optical nerve to the brain.

Social Studies: We worked on a leader lesson about setting goals.

Character Strength: We are learning about humility this week.

Notes:

  • Our Mexican Fiesta is Friday, December 20 from 9 am until noon. Family members are welcome and needed for food preparation, set up and clean up in the morning during the party. Here is our volunteer and guest list. Family members, due to the limited size of our classroom and the amount of food we have, we are not able to accommodate younger siblings.

Class activities for Wednesday, December 11

Wednesday, December 11th, 2019

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 39-41 are available and due on Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading skills practice day with MobyMax Foundational Reading and Reading Stories.

Writing: We talked about editing for dialogue by using quotation marks, commas, and periods.

Students also worked on editing.

A fiction story is due Sunday, December 15. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should be editing for dialogue punctuation, spelling, paragraphs, and other mistakes.

Math: We practiced two digit multiplication again today. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: Today was a health and nutrition lesson about getting 60 minutes of exercise.

Social Studies: Students completed a MiniQuiz about checks and balances and we started to learn about the Bill of Rights.

Character Strength: We are learning about humility this week.

  • Our field trip to the Michigan Capitol and Historical Museum is tomorrow, Thursday, December 12. Students need to arrive at school at 7:15 am and will need a sack lunch with disposable containers.

Spelling: We practiced using the there/their/they’re homophones.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 39-41 are available and due on Friday.

Reading: We decorated our arbolito (little tree) and started to read a story about a Mexican girl and her holiday traditions.

Writing: Students completed revising conferences by adding comments to a partner’s writing.

Students also worked more on revising.

A fiction story is due Sunday, December 15. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should be revising now by adding new words and ideas to their story to make it better.

Math: We practiced two digit multiplication today, such as 52 X 37. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy. Since this was our first day on this skill, some students were confused. Ask your student how they are doing with multiplication.

Science: We write a scientific explanation about how light helps animals to see their prey.

Social Studies: None today. We will have a MiniQuiz about checks and balances tomorrow.

Character Strength: We are learning about humility this week.

Spelling: We practiced spelling words with digraphs: ph, th, wh, ch, sh. These two letters form one new sound.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 39-41 are available and due on Friday.

Reading: Students completed a STAR Reading test today. Here is our progress so far this year:

Writing: We talked writing believable dialogue that sounds realistic and interesting. Kids should sound like kids, scientists like scientists, parents like parents.

Students also worked more on revising.
