Class activities for Friday, January 31

Friday, January 31st, 2020

Spelling: We used this time to create a graph of our reading levels in our leadership notebooks.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 53-54 are available and were due Friday. These are our last cursive worksheets of the year. For the remainder of the year, our weekly assignment will be 10 cursive sentences, with seven or more words each.

Reading: Students practiced reading using MobyMax Foundational Reading today.

Writing: Students worked on prewriting their literary essay again today and completed prewriting conferences. A literary essay is due Tuesday, February 11. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Students should be finished with prewriting this weekend.

Math: We practiced identifying multiples today. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: Students completed a sheep eye dissection today!

Spelling: We practiced soft syllable endings today. The words main and certain have the same ending spelling, but are pronounced differently because certain has a soft syllable ending.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 53-54 are available and are due Friday. These are our last cursive worksheets of the year. For the remainder of the year, our weekly assignment will be 10 cursive sentences, with seven or more words each.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students worked on prewriting their literary essay today. A literary essay is due Tuesday, February 11. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Students should work more on prewriting tonight.

Math: We practiced relating factors and multiples today. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: Students shared with the class the results of their group science experiments completed this week.

Social Studies: We reviewed important terms related to economics today.

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 53-54 are available and are due Friday. These are our last cursive worksheets of the year. For the remainder of the year, our weekly assignment will be 10 cursive sentences, with seven or more words each.

Reading: We checked out books today to use for our literary essay project. Students starting reading their books and then started to prewriting what the book was teaching. Homework is to finish reading the book tonight!

Writing: We finished prewriting a practice essay in class today. Here is a completed essay from another year. Here are the elements of an essay. And here is another example essay. A literary essay is due Tuesday, February 11.

Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Tonight, students should finish reading their story and decide what the story is teaching about. Students should also start prewriting if they can.

Math: We practiced identifying factors today. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: Students worked with other students to complete the science experiment they designed earlier.

Social Studies: We reviewed an organizer about how people have unlimited wants and limited resources, so they have to make choices about what goods and services they can buy. Homework is to finish the Economic Concepts organizer if not done in class.

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 53-54 are available and are due Friday. These are our last cursive worksheets of the year. For the remainder of the year, our weekly assignment will be 10 cursive sentences, with seven or more words each.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We finished the conclusion of our practice literary essay and started writing another practice essay. Here is a literary essay written in a past year using the elements of an essay. And here is an example essay. A literary essay is due Tuesday, February 11.

Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. There is nothing to work on for our essay project yet, but students could be making any final changes to their adventure story.

Math: We started working on our next topic about factors, multiples, and patterns. Today we practiced finding factor pairs. For example, the factor pairs for 24 are 1×24, 2×12, 3×8, 4×6. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Even though we are moving on, several students haven’t mastered 2-digit multiplication, which is a very important skill. It would be worthwhile to have your student continue to practice this skill at home. It will make the rest of the year and next year much easier. You can check Khan Academy or contact me if you want to see how your student is doing with multiplication.

Science: Students worked more on designing an experiment to test the sense of touch, smell, or hearing. Homework is to finish p. 3, if not done in class, and to bring any necessary materials for the experiment tomorrow.

Social Studies: We started a new topic about economics. Today, we talked about how people have unlimited wants, but there are limited resources, so people can’t have everything they want.

Math: Students continued to work on multiplication topics in Khan Academy. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: Students worked on designing an experiment to test the sense of touch, smell, or hearing.

Social Studies: Students completed a district government test today.

Character Strength: We are learning about perseverance this week.
