Today was our Hawaiian Beach Bash! Students had Hawaiian pizza, Capri Suns and fruit kabobs! Later, they tossed foam noodles, ate pineapple slices, danced to the Beach Boys, and tried to win the hula hoop contest! Thanks to all the families that helped with food, donations, decorations, games, setup and cleanup! Our party was totally tubular because of everyone’s help!
Cursive: Cursive pp. 25, 26, 29 are available and are due Friday.
Reading: Some students completed reading assessments today.
Writing: Students completed prewriting conferences today by commenting on a partner’s prewriting.
Students also continued to work on their prewriting.
A fiction story is due Sunday, November 24. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should be finished with prewriting by tonight.
Math: Today was another work day for students to finish up addition and subtraction skills or to work on the current topic.
Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.
Science: Students wrote a science argument to explain why one canyon would be deeper than another. Homework is to finish the Comparing Canyons science argument (a Google Doc) and to submit to Jupiter tonight if not finished in class.
Social Studies: We finished writing notes about the three branches of government and their powers.
Tomorrow is our Hawaiian Beach Bash! The party is from 12:30-3:30. Students, bring your costumes (summer or Hawaiian-type clothes) and you can change at school around lunch time. Family members are invited to join us and help with the food and games! Here is our volunteer and guest list.
Have you started a Daily Homework Time with your student? If homework causes tears or battles, or if you have had to deal with missing assignments or low grades, read more about Daily Homework Time and start one with your student. It will help!
Cursive: Cursive pp. 25, 26, 29 are available and are due Friday.
Reading: Students completed a STAR Reading test today. Here are our results so far this year:
Writing: We watched a video about how a baker was not prepared to bake cookies, and how terrible they turned out. This is like how a writer prepares in prewriting. If a writer takes time to “gather ingredients” during prewriting, by making a list of what will happen in the story, the story will turn out better and not “half-baked.”
Students also continued to work on their prewriting.
A fiction story is due Sunday, November 24. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should be finishing the end of their prewriting for the beginning, middle, and end of their fiction story.
Math: Today students paired up for “math coaching.” Students that mastered addition and subtraction skills coached students that were still struggling. There still nine students that haven’t mastered multi-digit subtraction skills. Ask your student to show you how they are doing with that skill.
Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.
Science: We used evidence to make a claim about why one canyon would be deeper than another. The evidence showed that if a canyon is older, or if the water was flowing faster, that could make a deeper canyon.
Social Studies: Students completed three MiniQuizzes about the topics we have learned about so far this year. If students want to make any corrections to improve their grades, they can relearn ideas from their minibook notes, their digital social studies text in Google Drive, or even a Google search. Students were asked to make corrections on paper, explaining why their new answers are correct. Homework is to make any needed corrections and to turn in tomorrow so there is time to add to this report card.
Can your student stay after on Thursday, until 5 pm, to help decorate for our party?
We are having a Hawaiian Beach Bash on Friday, November 8 from 12:30-3:30. Family members are invited to join us and help with the food and games! Here is our volunteer and guest list. We could use some parents to help with food and games on Friday. Add your name to the list if you can help.

Cursive: Cursive pp. 25, 26, 29 are available and are due Friday.
Reading: We read some dramas today that involved animal characters.
Writing: We talked about our next piece of writing, a fiction story. For the second marking period, we will be focusing on fiction stories (realistic, historical, fantasy, mystery, science fiction, fairy tales–any type of fiction). We talked about thinking about favorite stories and writing a similar one. I asked students to create their own characters and not to reused characters that have been created by others. Students started prewriting for their fiction story.
A fiction story is due Sunday, November 24. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes.
Math: We practiced multiplying using the distributive property today. For example, for 52 x 3. The 52 can be split into 50 + 2. The problem becomes (50 + 2) x 3, and can then be written as two parts: 50 x 3 and 2 x 3. Multiplying those parts and then adding the answers gives the total.
Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.
Science: We talked about our final science argument of this topic: explaining why two canyons could be different depths. From our stream table model, we learned that time and water speed can cause differences in canyons. A longer time or a faster water speed can make a deeper, bigger canyon, and a shorter time or a slower water speed can create a smaller canyon.
Social Studies: We wrote notes about the House of Representatives and their powers.

A “fictionalized” personal narrative is due Sunday, November 3. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes.
Math: We practiced multiplying numbers using area models today.
Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.
Science: We used a stream table to model water eroding sediment to form a canyon. We learned that the longer water moves, the more sand it erodes. We also learned that faster water causes much more erosion than slower water.
