Class activities for Thursday, November 1

Spelling: We reviewed adding suffixes onto base words. Sometimes the suffix is just added, but sometimes the suffix changes the spelling of the base word.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Fridays.

Reading: None today due to a health and nutrition lesson.

Writing: We talked about adding paragraphs for anything new:

  • New time
  • New place
  • New character
  • New action
  • New speaker

Students also worked on editing and publishing. Today was our last class work day for this piece of writing. A personal narrative is due Sunday, November 4. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes. Your student should be nearly finished with their writing by now.

Math: Students took a quiz about adding decimals today. We are up to 84% mastery, with a goal of 100% by November 13. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: None today.

Social Studies: We read about how new technology and better shipbuilding allowed explorers to sail around Africa to India.

Character Strength: We are learning about creativity this week.

Wednesday, October 31st, 2018

Spelling: None today due to a Troubadours assembly.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles.

Writing: Students worked on editing conferences today by commenting on a partner’s writing. Students also worked on editing today. A personal narrative is due Sunday, November 4. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes.

Math: We spent more time practicing adding decimals today. We are close to moving on to subtracting decimals. The class is working very hard on this topic! We’ve already achieved 77% mastery, with a goal of 100% by November 13. We are ahead of schedule! Everyone is using their math time wisely and making good progress. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We played a game to model how plants combine carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight to make sugar for their food.

Social Studies: None today due to extra time with science.

Character Strength: We are learning about creativity this week.

Spelling: We reviewed compound words and long vowel sounds.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Fridays.

Reading: We about making predictions, common elements of fairy tales, and also read part of another fairy tale.

Writing: We talked about stopping run on sentences by adding periods after one or two ideas. Students worked on editing today. A personal narrative is due Sunday, November 4. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes.

Math: We spent more time practicing adding decimals today. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: None today due to art.

Social Studies: We read about how European explorers were looking for trade routes to Asia and used new technologies to help them sail.

Character Strength: We are learning about creativity this week.

Spelling: Students used this time to complete a writing log and set a goal about their last piece of writing.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Fridays.

Reading: We read some fairy tales today about how people look for information to help solve a problem.

Writing: Students worked on revising today. A personal narrative is due Sunday, November 4. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes.

Math: We reviewed how to add decimals today. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We finished reading about how plants make food using the sun’s energy to combine carbon dioxide and water.

Social Studies: None today due to art.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due Fridays.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles. Students discussed the notes they wrote yesterday.

Writing: Students worked on revising conferences today by commenting on a partner’s writing.

Students also worked on revising again today. A personal narrative is due Sunday, November 4. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes.

Math: Today was a work day in math with students choosing self-selected topics to practice. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We read about how plants store energy from the sun as food, then herbivores eat plants, and carnivores eat herbivores. The energy moves up the food chain.

Social Studies: We learned about the “Maturity Continuum:”

  1. dependence: always needing help from others
  2. independence: doing things yourself
  3. interdependence: working with others

Character Strength: We are learning about perspective this week.
