Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles. In an effort to improve the quality of our discussions, we used the fishbowl method to observe good discussions. Students sat in a circle around a group, and we watched them having a discussion. Hopefully, students learn good habits by watching others and will have better discussions on our next discussion day.

Writing: We talked writing a fiction story so that it’s clear what the main character wants and what the problem is that needs to be solved.

Students also continued prewriting today. Our next piece of writing is a fiction narrative, due Monday, November 28. Homework is to finish prewriting, including planning the characters, plot of the story, and the settings.

Math: We practiced multi-digit multiplication again today using Khan Academy. Students that previously leveled-up on this skill worked with a partner to help them with their multiplicatin skills. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy and to level up on any remaining multiplication skills (shown below).

Here are some Khan Academy topics your students should be finished with by now:

Social Studies: We used this time to discuss the election results and to review branches of government and separation of powers.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We talked about the important of prewriting today. If someone wanted to bake cookies, they should first take time to gather ingredients and plan their recipe. If someone started baking without having the proper ingredients, the cookies would not turn out very good. In the same way, prewriting is a time for students to gather ideas and plan the events of a story. Without prewriting, the student may leave out important “ingredients” that will make the story seem “half-baked.”

Science: We reviewed our last science quiz. Students had challenges with using data to prove their claims about if medicines are safe and effective. Many students said they were interested in improving their quiz grade. I told students I’ll have copies of their answers on Monday and they can turn in corrections next week.

We also reviewed the last experiment about not changing many variables in an experiment.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on inferring or questioning as reading strategies.

Writing: We talked about editing for run-on sentences. Sentences should have one or two ideas, then start a new sentence.

Students also worked on editing conferences today with a partner and worked on editing their own writing.

Our last personal narrative will be due Monday, November 7; your student should be making changes by editing. Homework is to work on writing for at least 15 minutes.
