Writing: We talked about writing a lead like a waterfall. Upstream of the waterfall, the water is calm and boring. At the waterfall, the water is moving quickly and it’s exciting. The beginning of a story should be closer to the “waterfall.” That means a student should start a story closer to the interesting action, rather than very far “upstream.” The reader shouldn’t have to wait long for the story to get to the interesting parts.Students continued drafting today. Math: We continued to practice dividing multiples of 10 and 100 today. Students also worked on math skills using Khan Academy and MobyMax Math. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Science: We read today about qualitative and quantitative data. Homework is to finish analysis questions 1-5 on pp. 35-36.

Our Mission:
All students in Room 130 will do their best and get ready for 6th grade.

As you may already know our 5th grade students will be earning the opportunity to participate in an outdoor camping experience this school year. It is a wonderful opportunity to spend time with their fellow classmates and teachers while breathing in the fresh air and participating in outdoor learning activities. We look forward to camp each and every year!

Students earn the privilege to attend camp by following the high fives; respect, responsibility, empathy, integrity, and perseverance. Unfortunately, students who choose to continually not follow the high fives and receive three major office referrals will lose their privilege to stay overnight. These students will need to be picked up after dinner and may come back the next morning to participate in activities.

Any student receiving four major office referrals will have a 2 day out of school suspension to be served on the days of camp, Thursday and Friday.

Our hope is that every student will earn the right to go and not miss out on this wonderful experience. Teachers reserve the right, even if there haven’t been any office referrals, not to take a student if there is a valid concern for safety in an outdoor setting. We ask for your support in talking to your child about the importance of following the high fives.

Math: We practiced drawing pictures to help solve number stories. Students also worked on math skills using MobyMax Math. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy and to level up on any remaining multiplication skills (shown below).

Science: We reviewed the last experiment about human variation. We talked about how humans can vary slightly, but science can still make conclusions that apply to all people. Note: any corrections to the last science quiz are due on Friday. Quiz answers can be found at JupiterGrades in the Tests & Lessons section.

Social Studies: Students worked on the Chapter 2 test started earlier. Students not finished can work on the test at home or recess.
