Spelling:  Today was a preview of upcoming spelling words.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 15-17 are available and due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We talked about using precise nouns in writing: instead of writing “brown stuff,” say “rust.” Instead of “thing to lift the car up,” say “jack.” By being exact and specific, the reader will better understand what the writing is about.

Students also worked on their draft today.

The next piece of writing will be a personal narrative that has been slightly fictionalized, or, in other words, a personal narrative based on a true story. This piece of writing will be due Friday, November 6. This will be the final writing piece of the first marking period.  Students should be ready working on drafts by now.

Note also that many students have not yet turned in their piece of writing that was due October 16. Students had three weeks to work on this piece of writing. You can check to see if your student has completed their writing by logging in to SnapGrades and clicking on writing.

Math: We worked on making bar graphs today. Students reviewed the components of a complete bar graph and then surveyed the class to collect data. Homework is to finish the World Series Winners bar graph review page, and to complete their survey, if not done in class.

Science: We discussed the states of matter Investigation Review from last week.

Social Studies: Students started working on an Alphabet Soup organizer about farming, logging and mining. This organizer will be due later this week.

Reading: Students received new Literature Circles groups today based on their interest and their reading level. We also practiced highlighting test questions in a reading text, and students completed a reading test.

This piece of writing will be due Friday, November 6. This will be the final writing piece of the first marking period.  Students should be ready to start their draft this weekend or on Monday.

Science: We read about matter, mass, volume and states of matter. Homework is to complete the states of matter Investigation Review, if not done in class.

Math: We reviewed the partial sums method of addition today and then made a class bar graph of head sizes. We also reviewed how to find the median of a set of data. Homework is to complete Journal pp. 44-45.

Social Studies: We learned that timber in Michigan was referred to as “green gold” at one time. Timber was cut down, and sent to mills. The lumber was used in Michigan and neighboring states.

Spelling:  Students made their Words to Learn lists by correcting words they missed on the last spelling test. This is your student’s list of words to practice for the next test. Some students are still working on their list and may need to complete it at recess this week.

Social Studies: We learned that early pioneers to Michigan moved here to become farmers. This involved two of Michigan’s natural resources: forests and soil. Pioneers cleared forests, used some of the timber to build homes, and used the soil for growing crops.
