Class activities for Monday, October 19
Spelling: Today was the Unit 2 spelling and skill test. The Unit 2 spelling worksheet will be due on Wednesday.
Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 44-46 are available and due on Friday.
Reading: The final two groups presented their Literature Circles projects today; students will receive new Literature Circles groups later in the week.
Writing: Students started the third and final writing piece for this marking period. This piece will be a personal narrative that has been slightly fictionalized, or, in other words, a personal narrative based on a true story. To get the idea, we listened to My Rotten Red-Headed Older Brother by Patricia Polacco. This book is a story from the author’s childhood that has been slightly fictionalized.
Today was also the day to turn in to portfolios the second piece of writing, which was originally due on Friday.
Math: Students completed a MiniQuiz over data landmarks and were also introduced to a new method of addition, called the partial sums method. Below is a video showing the method in action. Homework is to complete Journal pp. 39 and 41.
Science: We used plastic syringes to learn that air is matter and takes up space. When students connected their syringes together with plastic tubing, they could move their partner’s plunger when they depressed their own plunger. When they both tried to push in their plungers, they couldn’t depress them all the way, and when students depressed their plungers enough, their partner’s plunger would even pop off!
Social Studies: We reviewed the Etch-a-Sketch organizer about Michigan’s natural resources.
