Class activities for Tuesday, January 31

Tuesday, January 31st, 2017

Spelling: We practiced understanding different meanings for the suffix -er:

  • painter: person who paints
  • stronger: more strong
  • letter: part of the word

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays. 

Reading: Today was a final day for students to rehearse their monologue, focusing on reading aloud with speed, tone, accuracy and volume.

Writing: We talked about organizing evidence in a literary essay by time (first, second, third) or by character (one character, another character, a final character). Students also worked on prewriting their literary essay (here’s our  example essay). A literary essay will be due Friday, February 10. Homework is to work on prewriting the essay for at least 15 minutes.

Math: We worked on decimal division again today. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Here are some skills that should be leveled up at this point:

Science: We learned and wrote notes about the nervous system today.

Social Studies: We reviewed what life was like in the American colonies. Homework is to finish the Lesson 2 Key Ideas, Got It, and Quiz.

Notes:

  • Our class will be performing a class play in March. Here are the after school class practice and performance times. Hopefully getting the schedule early will allow everyone to work out scheduling conflicts.
  • Middle school course request sheets are due February 14.

Spelling: We practiced common spelling patterns for soft syllable endings with the /er/ sound: writer, dollar, color.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays. 

Reading: Today was a reading skills and AR practice day with a guest teacher.

Writing: Students checked out a book from the library to write a literary essay about (here’s our  example essay). A literary essay will be due Friday, February 10. Homework is to work on prewriting the essay for at least 15 minutes.

Math: We practiced dividing whole numbers and showing the remainder as a decimal. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Science: We learned about the nervous system today. Homework is to finish the brain note pages started in class.

Social Studies: Students finished learning about daily colonial life with a guest teacher. Homework is to finish reading pp. 114-119 and writing notes. Students also worked on digital assessments in class, and we’ll have more time tomorrow to finish this.

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays. 

Reading: Students continued to practice a monologue by reading a section of text with good speed, tone, accuracy and volume. Today was also a reading skills and AR practice day.

Writing: We finished writing a literary essay together as a class (here’s our essay). A literary essay will be due Friday, February 10.

Math: We practiced dividing a decimal by a larger whole number. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Science: Students completed a MiniQuiz about the body systems we have learned about so far. We also learned about the reproductive system. Homework is to finish the reproductive system notes page started in class.

Social Studies: We started to learn about what the jobs and everyday life was like for people in colonial America.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays. 

Reading: Students started practicing monologues today by selecting a page of text they will read to the class, focusing on good speed, tone, accuracy and volume.

Writing: We started writing a literary essay together as a class. A literary essay will be due Friday, February 10.

Math: We practiced dividing a decimal by a whole number. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Science: We learned about the digestive and excretory systems today.

Social Studies: Students finished digital assessments for colonial regions today.

Spelling: We reviewed contractions and idioms today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays. 

Reading: None today due to the middle school course request assembly. Course request sheets are due February 14.

Writing: We reviewed the elements of a literary essay (here’s a sample). We also read another sample essay. A literary essay will be due Friday, February 10.

Math: We practiced rounding and using number sense to place the decimal in the answer of a decimal division problem. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Science: We read about the digestive system today.

Social Studies: None due to our reading skills and AR practice time.
