Class activities for Thursday, May 4

Thursday, May 4th, 2017

Spelling: We reviewed common spelling patterns for the /j/ sound: ge and dge.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We talked today about a third ingredient of a poem: emotion. We also talked about using line breaks in poems so that each line has a full idea. A collection of poems will be due on Friday, May 19.

To finish our information project, our I-Search Conference will on May 9.

Homework is to work on poems for 15 minutes.

Math: We worked on adding and subtraction of mixed numbers again today. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Recent skills we’ve worked on:

Science: We used a calendar to learn that extreme tides happen during full and new moons. Homework is to finish analysis questions 2-3 on p. 54 if not finished in class.

Social Studies: Students worked on digital assessments about winning independence today. We’ll have a test about the Revolutionary War soon.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: None today due to the late start.

Writing: We continued to work on poetry today. We learned that another ingredient of a poem is music. A musical poem is one that has a beat, a rhythm, a rhyme, or some repeating words. Some musical poems have the same number of syllables for each line. and visual details. We also talked about using line breaks so that just one idea is on a line, rather than other forms of writing the write from edge to edge. A collection of poems will be due on Friday, May 19.

Science: We drew moon phase diagrams and used a simulation to see that moon phases are caused by the revolution of the moon around the earth. Here is the simulation we used. Homework is to finish analysis questions 1-5 on p. 47 if not finished in class.

Social Studies: We read about how the Revolutionary War ended with the Brittish army surrendering after being trapped by the American army and French warships.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a discussion day in Literature Circles.

Writing: We continued to work on poetry today. We learned that one ingredient of a poem is imagery and visual details. We also talked about using line breaks so that just one idea is on a line, rather than other forms of writing the write from edge to edge. A collection of poems will be due on Friday, May 19.

Spelling: We continued to review homophones and proverbs today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading skills practice day due to Art.

Writing: We started our next writing topic, poetry. A collection of poems will be due on Friday, May 19.

To finish our information project, our I-Search Conference will on May 9.

Homework is to think of poetry topics to writing about.

Math: We worked on fraction addition for a final day today; about 10 people in our class were taking a very long time to finish working on this skill. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Recent skills we’ve worked on:

Science: We reviewed our previous three science experiments about the cause of changing amounts of daylight in seasons, what causes days and years, and what causes seasons.

Social Studies: Students finished working on a digital assessment about Revolutionary War battles. We also started reading about some of the factors that led to an American victory.
