Reading: Students completed a STAR Reading test today.

Writing: We talked about using line breaks to write words on a line that all belong to the same idea. Students also worked on their poems. A collection of poems will be due Sunday, May 19. Homework on weekdays is to work on writing for 15 minutes.

Math: We worked on multiplying mixed numbers again today. Homework on weekdays is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We did an experiment together to test how to get water and oil to stay mixed together. To do this, we mixed in some corn starch, flour, or lecithin. We found the lecithin helped the oil and water stay mixed, the flour stayed mixed for a while but started to separate into layers, and the corn starch separated quickly.

Social Studies: We reviewed for tomorrow’s test about the American Revolution.

Character Strength: We are learning about the #OtherPeopleMatter mindset.

Science: We did an attraction test today by putting drops of water or oil on pennies. We noticed that we could fit more drops of water on a penny than oil, because the water had a higher attraction than the oil.

Social Studies: We read about some factors that helped the colonists win the American Revolution.

Writing: We worked on group presentations about our Jet Toy Challenge engineering project. Students will present to visiting engineers tomorrow.

Science: We wrote a scientific explanation about why sugar and citric acid would be good ingredients to use in a salad dressing because they dissolve easily.

Social Studies: We read the battles of the American Revolution and the turning point in the war.

Character Strength: We are learning about leadership this week.

Writing: We talked about writing a fragment poem by writing a few words on each line, rather than full sentences. Here’s an example written by a past class.

Science: We used a simulation to model how solids dissolve into a liquid. We noticed that if the liquid attracts the molecules of the solid, it will dissolve.

Science: Today students tried to dissolve cumin, citric acid, sugar, and pepper and tasted the solutions. Sugar and citric acid dissolved, but the cumin and pepper did not.

Social Studies: We read about how the Second Continental Congress formed an army and formed a committee to write the Declaration of Independence.
