Spelling: We continued to review homophones and proverbs today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading skills practice day due to Art.

Writing: We started our next writing topic, poetry. A collection of poems will be due on Friday, May 19.

To finish our information project, our I-Search Conference will on May 9.

Homework is to think of poetry topics to writing about.

Math: We worked on fraction addition for a final day today; about 10 people in our class were taking a very long time to finish working on this skill. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Science: We reviewed our previous three science experiments about the cause of changing amounts of daylight in seasons, what causes days and years, and what causes seasons.

Social Studies: Students finished working on a digital assessment about Revolutionary War battles. We also started reading about some of the factors that led to an American victory.

Writing: We learned about animating bulleted lists on a slide so that the audience doesn’t read ahead.

Students also worked on editing and publishing today. Students will share their research as a digital presentation during our I-Search Conference on May 9 (new date). Homework is to finish slides for their presentation. Students were asked to include at least 7 slides in their presentation.

Math: None today due to the Talent Show. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Science: Today was the second session of the Jet Toy Challenge. Last week, students built a chassis. Today, they used tubes and balloons to create a “jet” engine. Students tested different diameters of tubes and different weights of cars to see which combination made their car travel the farthest.

Social Studies: None today.

Writing: We talked about using interesting, authentic details in writing, rather than plan or boring facts or numbers. Students also learned how to add videos to their presentation.

Science: We started to read about the cause of seasons and how the sun’s rays affect seasons. Many poor behavior choices by a few disruptive students wasted a lot of our learning time, making the class have to finish for homework rather than working during class time. Homework is to finish reading pages 38-39 and to finish analysis questions 1-2 on p. 40.

Social Studies: We worked on a district social studies test about settlement again today.

Science: We learned about what causes seasons. Most students predicted that summer is warmer because earth is closer to the sun, and winter is warmer because earth is farther away. We tested this prediction with a computer simulation. According to the simulation, earth is farther from the sun during our summer, and closer to the sun during our winter. So it’s not distance that creates our seasons. Then we tested how the tilt of earth affects seasons. We learned that without a tilt, our temperature and daylight would be like spring all year long, but with a tilt, we have changing seasons. It’s the tilt of the earth that causes our seasons (we are tilted toward the sun in summer, and away from the sun in winter). Homework is to finish analysis questions 1-7 on p. 31.

Social Studies: We worked on a district social studies test about settlement.
