Spelling: None today.

Cursive: No cursive assignment this week.

Reading: We read some example stories about our next writing project.

Writing: We started talking about our next writing project, a Choose Your Own Adventure fiction gamebook. Students will write a fiction adventure story with choices that the reader can make. Each choice can change how the story turns out. Students will publish their adventure as a website at Google Sites. See below for more details. Homework is to prewrite ideas for an adventure story.

Math: Students worked on a STAR Math test today. Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: None today due to art.

Social Studies: We learned about the Bill of Rights and our responsibilities as Americans to obey the law, vote knowledgeably, and to serve on a jury. We’re having a test about government tomorrow.

Character Strength: We are learning about self-control again this week.

Class activities for Friday, December 15

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 39-41 are available and were due today.

Reading: None today due to the Holiday Sing-Along.

Writing: Today was a publishing day. Our next piece of writing is a fiction story due Monday, December 18. Your student should be completing their story and making it ready to be read. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes and to finish the writing piece if needed.

Math: We worked on the multiplication topic at Khan Academy today. Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy if needed.

Science: We started an experiment to test if matter takes up space and if air is matter. We used syringes of air to learn that air is matter and air takes up space.

Social Studies: We reviewed the Power Problems and Checks and Balances note page completed on Wednesday.

Character Strength: We are learning about self-control this week.

Class activities for Wednesday, December 13

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 39-41 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: We used this time to practice for our sing along on Friday.

Writing: We used a software tool called GradeProof to edit our writing. We also had editing conferences and worked on editing today. Our next piece of writing is a fiction story due Monday, December 18. Your student should be editing for spelling, capitals, periods, paragraphs and other conventions by now. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes.

Math: We worked on the multiplication topic at Khan Academy today. Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We learned about common temperature benchmarks: water freezing, room temperature, body temperature, and water boiling. Homework is to finish the temperature benchmarks note page started in class.

Social Studies: We talked about checks and balances and how each branch could check the others to limit power. Homework is to finish the Power Problems and Checks and Balances note page started in class.

Class activities for Tuesday, December 12

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 39-41 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: Today was a reading skills practice day using MobyMax Foundational Reading.

Writing: We talked making the beginning of a story match the main problem of the story. This is called a “waterfall lead.” If the waterfall is the problem, then a writer should start a little “upstream” of the problem, but not too far upstream so that it takes too long to reach the problem of the story.

Students also worked on editing today. Our next piece of writing is a fiction story due Monday, December 18. Your student should be editing for spelling, capitals, periods, paragraphs and other conventions by now. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes.

Math: We practiced multiplying multiples of 10, 100, and 1000 today in our topic about multiplicationHomework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We practiced using thermometers to measure temperature.

Social Studies: We learned about how a President can veto a bill, and Congress can override a veto. This is part of checks and balances.

Class activities for Monday, December 11

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Cursive worksheet pp. 39-41 are available and are due Friday.

Reading: Students practiced reading a reader’s theatre script today to practice oral reading fluency.

Writing: We talked more about changing the beginning of sentences so they don’t all sound the same. One trick to do this is to rearrange the words of the sentence. Students also worked on revising conferences today by writing comments to a partner. Our next piece of writing is a fiction story due Monday, December 18. Your student should be almost done revising at this point by changing words or ideas. Homework is to work on writing for 15 minutes.

Math: We started our next topic about multiplication. We also started practicing multiplication facts today for students that haven’t started yet. Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We made predictions and thought of questions about our next topic: matter and energy.

Social Studies: We started to learn about how each branch can limit the power of the other branches. This is called checks and balances.

Character Strength: We are learning about kindness this week.
