Class activities for Wednesday, November 19

Spelling: Today was a preview of upcoming spelling words.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Student finished performing their Literature Circles projects to share their book with the class.

Writing: Students worked on editing conferences today. A fiction story is due Monday, November 24. Your student should be editing by now.

Math: We practiced drawing pictures and writing equations to help solve number stories.

Here are some of the skills we’ve been working on lately. These would be good skills to practice at home.

Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes or more using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: Students completed a test today about body systems, genetics, and how animals use physical and behavior traits for survival.

Social Studies: None today due to our reading skills and AR practice time.

Reading: Student groups started to perform their Literature Circles projects to share their book with the class.

Writing: Students worked on editing their current story. A fiction story is due Monday, November 24. Your student should be editing by now.

Math: We reviewed multiplying larger numbers today.

Here are some of the skills we’ve been working on lately. These would be good skills to practice at home.

Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes or more using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We reviewed body systems, genetics, and how animals use physical and behavior traits for survival. We’ll have a test about these ideas tomorrow.

Social Studies: We started to learn about the “first come, first served” attitude about European explorers coming to the New World.

Class activities for Monday, November 17

Monday, November 17th, 2014

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Students worked on Literature Circles projects that they will perform starting tomorrow in order to share their book with the class.

Writing: We talked about how to tighten dialogue by making it important to the story, and by removing dialogue that isn’t interesting or important.

Students also worked on revising conferences today. A fiction story is due Monday, November 24. Your student should be revising by now.

Math: We reviewed multiplying two-digit numbers today

Here are some of the skills we’ve been working on lately. These would be good skills to practice at home.

Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes or more using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We learned about physical and behavior traits that help an animal survive. Physical traits include a cat’s sharp teeth, a giraffe’s long neck, and a cheetah’s speed, and behavior traits include making nests, hunting in packs, and flying in a v-formation.

Social Studies: Students completed a chapter 4 test today.

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Students worked on Literature Circles projects that they will perform starting Tuesday in order to share their book with the class.

Writing: Students worked on revising today. A fiction story is due Friday, November 21. Your student should be revising by now.

Math: We reviewed multiplying one-digit numbers today, such as 38 x 7. Many students thought this skill was “easy.” In fact, many students did a double-take, but it is a lesson from our 5th grade curriculum. This is just a good reminder that for students that have working hard in class and practicing at home, they’ve made one difficult skills “easy” by practicing. For 5th graders that keep practicing, they will continue to be ready for skills before we introduce them in class.

Social Studies: Students completed a reading challenge MiniQuiz over ideas from chapter 4 about explorers. We’ll have a test about this on Monday. The reading challenge can also be completed again at home to use as a study guide for the test. Reading: None today due to the half day schedule.

Writing: None today due to the half day schedule. A fiction story is due Friday, November 21. Your student should be revising by now.

Math: Students worked on math skills using MobyMax today.

Here are some of the skills we’ve been working on lately. These would be good skills to practice at home.

Homework is to practice math for 15 minutes or more using MobyMax or Khan Academy.

Science: We made dogs today! Students modeled how traits are passed from parents to offspring by randomly drawing a section of “DNA” code. The code represented a trait, such as eye color, ear shape, leg length, or fur type. Based on the code, each pair drew their dog. We learned that each dog was unique; each dog had at least one trait in common with another dog, but no dog was identical.
