Class activities for Monday, May 22

Monday, May 22nd, 2017

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: None today due to the middle school field trip.

Writing: We started our final project of the year, a compare and contrast research project called Find It, Decide It. Students will be working with a partner to research a decision, compare and contrast two choices, and to make a decision based on research. Students should try to select their final topic idea tonight. The Find It, Decide It project is due Friday, June 2.

Math: We worked on dividing fractions word problems, and turning fractions into decimals. These are the final fraction skills of 5th grade. Your student should be leveled up on all fraction skills in Khan Academy (have them show you!). We’ll be finishing the year with volume and geometry skills. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Science: We reviewed our experiments from last week about planets in the solar system, modeling planet distances in the solar system, and modeling planet sizes.

Social Studies: We learned about how the Constitution split the powers of the government into federal and state powers. Students also worked on the digital Key Ideas, Got It? and Quiz for this lesson.

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading skills practice day.

Writing: Students worked on publishing their poetry collection today. A collection of poems is due today, Friday, May 19, although students could still work on their collection this weekend if needed.

Math: We worked on dividing fractions and whole numbers today. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Science: Student groups shared presentations about their Jet Toy Challenge project with the engineers that helped us.

Social Studies: None today.

Spelling: None today.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Students completed a STAR Reading test today.

Writing: Students worked on editing conferences today. We also talked about taking weak parts out of poems to make them sound better. A collection of poems will be due on Friday, May 19.

Homework is to work on poems for 15 minutes.

Math: Students completed a STAR Math test today. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Science: We drew a model of the sizes of planets in our solar system. Homework is to finish the drawing and to answer the question: What did you learn about the sizes of planets from your drawing?

Social Studies: We learned about how a compromise created the two houses of our Congress and how slaves were counted as 3/5 of a person in the original Constitution.

Class activities for Wednesday, May 17

Spelling: Today was a spelling and skill test.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on breaking apart words and using context clues as a reading strategy.

Writing: Students worked on revising conferences today. A collection of poems will be due on Friday, May 19.

Homework is to work on poems for 15 minutes.

Math: We worked on dividing fractions today. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Science: We started an experiment about making a scale model of the distances of the planets in our solar system. We ran out of time due to poor choices by some in our class. Students have the option of finishing the scale drawing using a ruler for homework, and working on analysis question 2 on p. 27, or finishing the experiment at lunch.

Social Studies: We learned about how there was a debate about making a constitution after the Articles of Confederation failed.

Monday, May 15th, 2017

Spelling: We reviewed doubling the last consonant when adding suffixes for certain words. This will be the skill tested for tomorrow’s spelling test.

Cursive: Ten cursive sentences, seven or more words each, are due on Fridays.

Reading: Today was a reading day in Literature Circles; some groups worked on summarizing as a reading strategy.

Writing: We talked about turning a story or memory into a poem today, and also how to use white space to point out important parts. A collection of poems will be due on Friday, May 19.

Homework is to work on poems for 15 minutes.

Math: We worked on multiplying mixed numbers today in area problems and number stories. Homework is to practice math for at least 15 minutes using MobyMax Math or Khan Academy.

Science: We reviewed our last experiments and wrote notes about moon phases, tides, planets, and space objects.

Social Studies: We started to learn about the new government created after the American Revolution, called the Articles of Confederation.
